Is there a reason you want to grow it in a container specifically? It would not be my first choice for that situation and even less so if it was in a mixed planting. It is quite prone to root rots if soil is not very well drained.....and most potting soil is excessively moisture retentive. It also dislikes hot summer climates and much humidity.

For a container setting, I'd pick Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue' as a more suitable but similar groundcover plant.

Only because I can only grow in containers (I am on the 4th floor in a condo). :) I have only grown it by itself, not in a mixed container.

I have also had zero success growing moss phlox (subulata) and have given up on those. They just conk off at some point during the growing season.

Try the veronica :-) Much of the same sort of attributes as the lithodora but a much easier plant to grow well and also better looking. And easily grown in a container.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the easy availability and the unique color and texture make lithodora so attractive. :(

LOL!! I don't find it attractive at all! Even here in almost ideal growing conditions it often looks half dead if not in flower. Really requires a tight, after winter shearing to regain some attractiveness. It also does not bloom nearly as long as most sources would have you think. Primary bloom period is now into late May, then only sporadic flowering summer into early fall

True, I think the bloom period is quite brief and the foliage only looks good when it is in bloom. I guess it is better treated as a seasonal annual like hybrid tulips. Of course, being a ground cover, it does not have what tulips offer except that the blooms last longer than the tulips.

one of the definitions of a green thumb.. is that you killed every plant 3 times ...

and you know why its only 3 times ... because you become a good enough gardener.. after losing 3 times ... to know that this plant is NOT worth trying to kill a 4th time ...

crikey ... give up and find something else ... lol ...

there are hundreds of plants i want in my garden... and i know i cant have them.. unless i move to a warmer clime ... so be it ...

I am going to try and not get tempted the next time I see them. That lesson also applies to Gardenia for me I guess. I think I may have killed them at least three times already. 😊
