The most consistently deer resistant plants are those enclosed by a completely effective fence. In addition mule and white tailed deer do not go for all the same species of plants. So any list that does not specify which species of deer is being discussed - and that appears to be the vast majority of compilations out there - has an unknown applicability to specific locations built in right at the start. On top of all the other variations in how deer react to unprotected plantings.

When I saw the topic heading, I was hoping to learn what I could unleash on the rose campion that is spreading prolificallly in a bed where I planted it! However, I already have to fence that particular location to keep out rabbits (who love aster, rudbeckia, and echinacea!), so I’ll pass on the deer! In 33 years, they have only visited the yard handful of times. We are located at a busy y-intersection, so maybe that discourages them.
