I'm a fan of the white/creamy ones. #2 and #3 look more matte than the rest--are your counters polished or honed? Those counters are so pretty!

Thanks, they are polished fantasy brown. All the tiles are glossy. 3 and 4 are the same color in a different size. I am leaning towards #2 but it is the most expensive, of course!

I’d say lay it out in a classic but interesting pattern.

I prefer number 1. Two is too small.

1 looks best.

2 is too small, 3 is too gray.. unless you really really want a gray look.

I like the gray but knowing that countertop color, I would choose a creamy white. I think gray might darken the room too much, and a creamy white (in longer tiles) keeps the attention on the countertop. Our monitors won’t know the best one, of course.

I would say 5 but think something like one of these would be a nice compliment

I think the backsplash should MATCH one main color in the counter. And I like larger tiles rather than small tiles so there is less grout showing. Only you can see the actual tile colors...things often look
different on screens than in reality.

I've used both small and large subways in the same kitchen and bathroom and found that just that minor change makes a huge difference. It really changes the feel of the space. I'm a bit OCD about my decor, but I drew out large and small tiles on a paper, photocopied it and then taped them to my backsplash to get a feel for how the different sizes felt. If you do this, steel yourself for eye-rolling from those standing in the background who aren't TKO :-)

@Beth H. :I hear you about white subway. I have some of those pics saved in my idea book! I did at least pick out a bone colored handmade tile. :). Bright white makes my cabinets look too yellow. My last backsplash was a pretty busy mosaic that I tired of but it was paired with a plain beige corian so it worked. But with this fantasy brown, I am worried anything too busy will detract from the countertop. I almost am wishing I had gone with my 2nd choice of leathered black granite just so I could use a pretty patterned tile though. That arabesque is gorgeous. Is it easy to lay? We will likely be doing this ourselves, so anything to make the project easier is a plus. We do like the 1/3 layout like you mentioned for subway.

If you keep the mosaic on the tiny side, and mostly in the creamy whites (which calcutta is) you'll be fine. it won't be busy

We decided to go simple. Mainly because my installer (husband) was stressed about anything too involved. We did a handmade field tile from Sonoma—the Dakota in Summit

This looks fantastic. We had fantasy brown installed 10 years ago and it was so hard to find a backsplash tile that matched. Everything was always pure white, grey white ... I saw this look in a magazine and searched high and low for this tile. I settled with something else. And of course a year later this tile was everywhere. Ten years later I still love it when I see it in your beautiful kitchen. Going back to look at it again :)
