Tj say I dig up the roots and they don’t look good. What’s my next move ?

replaced them .. and plant these out back where you dont look at them every day ... or pot them and grow the roots for fall planting.l..

are they all right next to a new black asphalt driveway ... they might not be enjoying that??.. or maybe they got stepped on during construction...

@ken my post said Philadelphia. Close to driveway isn’t a big deal it gets shaded most of the day and every plant in this bed is thriving. I put them here so I can look at them everyday. They add a nice touch of color and variety. They were put in after construction. Being that they are new plants to me I was hoping a veteran would be able to point out something I could do different do get them to recover quicker.

I find heucheras to be somewhat finicky plants to grow. They were some of the first ones I was into when I started gardening 10 years ago, and sometimes they would do really well for a few years, then they would peter out. Some of the basic ones can be more tough, but then they also do this heave thing where the root seems to rise to the surface, and it pushes itself out of the ground. Sorry I don’t have an answer for you. What I know is for me, I just lost interest in them because they were just too erratic.

Never fall found them to be long lived or consistent from variety to variety. The same goes for their cousin heuchera. Green spice and Autumn bride have done well season to season. The other 20 or so I've tried over many many years just peter out after a few seasons at the most.

James, in your first picture with the 3 heucherella, do you know the name?

What I have found is some varietieslove the sun, Heuchera Caramel, while others thrive iin the shade, Purple Palace. Sooooo, I guess maybe they are fussy!
