Pine walls, Floral Sofas..Dated? Ugly?...No Way

It’s Oh be still my heart for me. It’s so very not California, and not in vogue, perhaps, but.. How do you all see it? Could accept as is, or need to paint the wood and change the decor?

Love it, agree that it is very cozy. A room I would be happy to spend time in.

It is lovely and cozy...due to the shade of the paneling and the fact that the decor respects it rather than fights it.

Love it...the wood coffee tables and turned legs and horizontal paneling help.

Love it. She embraced the wood tones, and the selections create an inviting, comfortable room.

The floral on the sofa is the original I chose for our living room chairs. Still love it even tho it is cat-astrophed and hiding under the new slipcovers.

That color scheme is my absolute favorite, the color in the rug are perfect. I could move into that room today and never change a thing.

May not be 'California' but it's wonderful. There's a timeless grace and ease - you could never pin a year on that room and to me that's goal #1.

This gets a no from me. The beige floral drapes and multi-color floral sofa are meh. There is nothing special about the ginger jar lamp, and I'm guessing the floral arrangement is dried flowers. I like the other things in the room, including the paneling.

Well you know me...queen of white paint, 😂 but that room/paneling is really gorgeous and even I wouldn’t paint it! The large window makes the difference...it doesn’t look dark. However...😩😬 I would change the upholstery to a different floral/pattern. It just looks a tad fusty to me (don‘t hate me!!!) 😂 I think I had that pattern (Calico Corners?) to cover some tables in my college dorm room. 😂

I went to the company’s website, Corley Designs, and this room and the patio from the same house (mountain style gallery) are the ONLY two things I like on the whole website of many projects. The other rooms in this house were displeasing to me, along with every other house they’ve done. So the room itself is practically a miracle, las in a bunch of monkeys playing on typewriters accidentally banging out a sonnet 😎

    Overall a really lovely space

The rug isn't working for me - nothing wrong with it--coordinates really well - just not a fan of colors - I tired of them back in their heyday.

That room is close to the polar opposite of my taste and what I like. I like cool colors and bright pastels with as little wood or brown showing as possible, and preferably none at all, including floors. I prefer geometric or tribal patterns to florals.

That room reminds me of the 1990s and some of the furniture that I had to draw back then that I really did not like. I was much happier when I was able to design minimalist furniture with very sleek lines.

    I also prefer this room:

which a lot of people hate, but this is my personal preference.

Lars, your taste has a lot of appeal, too.

I just love that cozy feel up above. Without furniture in there, I wonder if I'd be thinking the walls should be painted white?

So what is it that makes me appreciate that paneling? I think it's the color. I think it's about time to embrace more patterns and color rather than giving everything a white background. So, both Lars' photo and the cozy cottage photos appeal right now.

I love it. While the bench is very handsome, I think it belongs in a hallway, not here.

I‘m so torn, I love that country home look, but the more I hang around my parents’ MCM furniture from their 1956 house, and Dad’s office, all the Herman Miller, Knoll, and Danish imports, the more I start to lean that clean way.

I need two homes. My brother and I have half-seriously thought about getting a studio or 1Br in Marina City, where we could have all the MCM and Danish Modern, and it could be our pied à terre (if we ever get back to needing one) and his landing pad when he’s not wherever he will be when he retires.

I wouldn't dare paint those walls. They give the room such charma and character. I love the room the way it is. However, I might change a few things (ex rug). It is a bit tight with all of the larger furninishings.

It's gorgeous! Wouldn't change a thing. Well, maybe the art on the wall. Black frames and stark white mats? Not my first choice with that gorgeous paneling. Crushing on floral sofas again. And the print is swoon worthy. If I ever recover my cat-atstrophe of a sofa...I might go with a print fabric.

I love multiple styles as well, bpath. Four houses and the jackpot and I should be good. Oh and I'll be hiring the bunch of you to help me furnish! :D

    It's not to my taste.

I love wood paneling. personally I prefer it to have a 60s vibe, but still. not everybody wants to paint over wood!

It wasn't what I would do in my own home but the rug makes it work. It grounds all the colours and the patterns.

The panelling is really lovely, and the room itself is lovely. To me the decor is fine and pleasant, but really boring.

The floral drapes and upholstery are just not very interesting. I also strongly dislike the autumnal color scheme, but that is personal. It just makes me think of back to school clothes shopping.

I also think it is sort of "Garanamials" decor, and not something you should have to hire a professional to do. Start with a floral, than pick a stripe with the same colors, and round it out with some solids by pulling out colors from the floral. OK, fine.

I guess all in all, if this were an existing room, I wouldn't suggest anyone change it (though I would if it were mine.) If someone told me they just paid someone to do this, I'd be surprised.

"If someone told me they just paid someone to do this, I'd be surprised."

I think a lot of people need validation from pros for certain design styles. I agree with the Grand Millennial (? ;-)) description. To me, the room is very cozy and looks effortless. But the simplest looks are often times the trickiest to pull off for many people.

Incidentally, the current green fabric on my cat-astrophe of a couch is quite similar to the green chair in the pic. I wonder if that's another reason I'm appreciating this room? Seems as if it would suit my current seating.

The room reminds a bit of one of Tory Burch's living room we discussed in this forum a while back. The paneling and the floral seating.

I think the TB room shows far more decorating skill and is more interesting. Bold wall color in mustard, and then red WT, plum lampshades and, also, a whole bunch of orange lampshades. Of those 4 very strong colors, I only see one in the sofa and none in the chair. The upholstery choices themselves are more unique.

To my eye, this is a far more interesting and sophisticated room. There is nothing wrong with the first room at all, it is very pleasant as I have said. This room is, to me, a far more impressive feat of design. I also prefer it, despite being a color phobe.

Another photo. Look at the throw pillow on the sofa on the left... yet another creative "mismatch" that I think works.

    more of the room/s

Sorry MTN, but my reaction to the T Burch room is a big ewwwww. And it’s littered with creative ugly, IMO. Oh, and where shalI I place my drink on that coffee table? but that’s the least of it. The orange , tan, Chinese red, pink and mustard ? Ewwwww.

LOL creative ugly. Ok so you say Eww, and I saw "yawn." My issue is, that even if I wanted a sort of old-fashioned floral country room, I think there are better executed versions. I am guessing a Bunny Williams for example.

All in all, i don't think panelling= dated or floral=dated or even warm tones necessarily=dated, but all three together without anything fresh or new or terribly unique or interesting, is not really designing it's copying. I copy all the time, it's all I do, but I am not paid.

Hehe, martinca! I remember that room getting mixed reviews here. All the lampshades get a big nope from me but I certainly appreciate all the layers and attention to detail. The room "works" whether or not it's my favourite cup of tea.

    last modified: 5 years ago

mtnrdredux_gw I agree. the room in the original post looks like something my mom would put together. as far as DIY non-pro "copycat" decorators go, I think she's very good. but does this room look like a really creative professional designer did it? nope.

(not snarking on DIY copycat decorators. I put myself in that category as well.)

Yes, ILoveMod, that is exactly what I mean.

Here's another TB room...not so out there, but it is more creative. For example, unless I am missing something, every wall is a a pale green blue, but those colors are not picked up anywhere, they are just a foil.

I didn’t answer my own query. So..... I‘d adore this room for my cozy den. Critique: There’s something about the *red leather that catches my eye, but the scale of the bench is off. It could, hopefully, go elsewhere in the room. I’d replace the curtains with light linen or simple woven woods , only lowered as needed. Replace dried ( yuk) arrangement with shiny bowl of red apples, limes, or Fresh flowers . Agree with kswl: did not care for any of the other work seen on their site.

    * what is it about that bench? : after some study, I think it’s the solid depth of color and soft sheen of the leather that adds a needed masculinity clarity and sheen to what could feel ..what? Too soft or dull? Interesting comments...thanks all!

One last look...I think the removing the curtains might free it from feeling stuffy. Much as I like the bench, it closes the room in.....claustrophobic,perhaps. Room would be more welcoming without it there.

For me, the OP room reads a little “grandma” with those particular floral patterns on the couch and drapes and has an overall dark, oppressive feel, despite the large window. I think the walls are pretty but I’d pair them with lighter, more modern furnishings

“All in all, i don't think panelling= dated or floral=dated or even warm tones necessarily=dated, but all three together without anything fresh or new or terribly unique or interesting, is not really designing it's copying. I copy all the time, it's all I do, but I am not paid.” Excellent point, MTN. Here’s a Bunny Williams . Perhaps all the various odd things on the mantel ( and elsewhere, I’m imagining) make the room more interesting, but not as inviting to my eye as the original room. This one is pretty 50’s ugly to moi.

I still always bristle to hear rooms called 'grandma'.; using grandma as a pejorative...as far as the autumnal colors, the naturalness of such a palette is relaxing to me, and why I've used such warm colors in parts of my home. Including, in one room, pine paneling, floral curtains (once the new windows are in) and the warm, gentle, autumnal colors. Frankly, I am increasingly really appreciating decorating, in any palette, that embraces comfort and unpretentiousness, and doesn't have to 'wow', perform or impress. One might think this is a result of my grandma stage of life, but I began leaning in this direction since my late 40's. BTW MTN, IMO the chair's teal frames appear to reference the wall color in your photo of the TB interior above.
