Is this Rose Rosette?

last modified: 5 years ago

So I bought these roses online they are from Direct Gardening. They are supposed to be Blue Moon roses but it's direct Gardening so they probably have like a 1/10 chance of being what I actually ordered. When they got here they looked like they might have Rose Rosette Disease. Some canes are super thorny and others are not I pulled off some of the excess thorns as I like my gardens to be kid friendly. I dug it up after planting it and am quarantining it in my basement. It then sprouted and is now not growing like it has rose rosette. The new growth has barely any thorns and is like bright green with a thin line of red on the edges of the petals. One of the biggest things I am worried about is the difference in thorn count from one stem to another and the red ring around the edges of the mature leaves on both sides. (though the mature leaves are really young still and might still be maturing) Please tell me what you think.

    ‘‘… my gardens …’’

Lady Catherine de Bourgh had several carriages.

    That is perfectly healthy.

    Your plant looks fine

Take it back out in to the sunshine and watch it.

Nobody likes thorns but every time you remove them it leaves an open wound where disease actually can get in.

I am proud of you for wanting to create a beautiful garden

Well done ! By the way I have gotten wonderful, healthy, true to name roses from Garden Diect

    Best of luck !

Perfectly good young growth, agree with Kristine and Dianela.

Thank you so much! It means a lot to me. Where I live Rose Rosette literally doesn't exist and hopefully won't get here. My neighbors all have roses and I nearly freaked out when I thought it was rose rosette due to the fact that I was afraid I had introduced it to my neighborhood!

Also one more question, I have another rose that has 3 branches coming out of one node where a leaf was in multiple places. It doesn't look deformed even though it is red so I am assuming it is a very bushy variety. Would that be a symptom of Rose Rosette?

Looks healthy to me. I wouldn't remove anymore thorns. If you want a garden that's kid friendly, buy rose varieties that are nearly thorn free instead of having to remove thorns.

I am never going to remove another thorn, I had no idea it was so bad for the plant! I had a Zephrine Drouhin rose I absolutely adored last year and it was perfect for kids. It was totally thornless. However I gave it to my grandparents for their house because they had a perfect spot for it. I had put it on a fence then realized that the fence was WAY too small for the bush that was growing so well. I loaded it with Epsom salts and it was just unbelievably healthy. I never lost a single leaf to black spot/mildew (I don't know how). Next time I visit I have to fix the plant as I have been informed it got crushed by a pile of snow that fell off the roof 😑.

Here is that one with 3 branches on one node. Is this rose rosette or something I should monitor?

Looks perfectly healthy 😀. It is good you are concerned about introducing something so horrible into your area. Your plants look wonderful.

Thank you so so much! I just want to make sure nothing is diseased. I hear horror stories on here about people who lose entire gardens to this awful disease. Hopefully there will be a cure soon. I have been researching and it seems like a lot of people are investigating cures for this disease.

As a mom of two , one in particular who can’t keep his hands off things .. kids will learn by experience to not touch . You’ll drive yourself mad trying to kid proof a garden . Can’t be done . Lol

Just teaching and showing them it can cause an owie and even if they find out themselves, is how they learn .

I have over 100 roses and one absolutely crazy toddler who got it pretty quickly .

Good luck and just enjoy the roses !!

I believe it! My siblings love my flowers but I keep telling them don’t touch the roses and don’t pick my prize daffodils!!!!!!!
Here is a picture of one of my daffodils.

@Lilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca Totally agree. I've also got two young ones and I grow thorny and poisonous plants. I've just told them a million times which ones they can eat and which they can't, and what could happen if they don't listen. They are wild rambunctious kids who love to see what they can get away with but they both know that mama's instructions on poisonous or thorny plants don't get ignored, ever. They still enjoy the garden very much and I don't have to restrict myself with which plants I can get.

Thank you so much for your advice! I am going to make a list with pictures of what is thorny and what is poisonous.
Also I just got 150 more daffodils from my neighbor. They look like this:

I don't think that looks like RRD; those look like very healthy new roses!

Every time someone says it's not rose rose rosette I feel so relieved! I couldn't focus on anything but my roses for like 3 days after reading the horror stories on here about how it spreads super fast.

The rose from the original pics looks great. It is darkening into a nice red color.
