Thanks for the info. I think you might be right. We looked up the bird on the Audubon field guide. They apparently are in this area. I disturbed a nest while weeding last year and the eggs looked like the description of the killdeer's eggs.

another ground nester and we have them in our yard, is the Brown Thrasher. They especially like to next under branches and weeds that we plan to burn and we often have to wait because you wouldn't want to roast babies.
