Bathroom Tile Color

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi all,

I have a bad tile job in my master bathroom that now needs replaced as we are having some water damage as a result. We are planning on only replacing the floor tile, shower tile, and possibly the shower doors. We might also put some fresh paint on the walls (a lighter grey). The white double vanity and dark granite will remain the same. I'm looking for some thoughts on tile colors.

Below is what our bathroom currently looks like (please excuse the dirty shower doors):

Closeup of granite color:

I originally thought of sticking with grey and white for everything similar to what we already have because I usually like to keep things neutral, but then saw some of these photos and really like the turquoise/aqua color for the shower. I'm not sure if we would go with a darker or lighter color as I haven't looked at tile in person yet. I also thought of doing white subway tile with an aqua tile accent strip.

For the shower floor and bathroom floor tile, we would use white or light grey.

My questions are:

If you used a colored tile in your shower, did you get sick of it after a while? If you used white tile, did you get bored with it?

Should the shower ceiling be tiled? If so, white tile or aqua so the entire shower is aqua?

Should around the toilet be tiled? If so, white tile or aqua?

Any suggestions on shower doors? I hate the sliding one we have but it might just be a cheap one.

I love aqua/turquoise and I think it would give a nice pop of color to the bathroom. My parents have all of their shower ceilings tiled and around all of their toilets tiled as well and I like how it looks, but I'm inclined to use white tile at least around the toilet so only the shower is aqua.

Please share your thoughts!

This is what we did in our main bathroom if this helps.

Thank you - how you did your shower is the third option I had thought of with while tiles and an aqua accent.

looks like you have polished Steel Gray granite.

here's a bathroom w/your granite and vanity color:

Will you get tired of the blue tile? Only you know that question. After 5 years, you will prob want something different. I have a green glass tile in the spare bath and I'm kind of tired of it.

*I'm posting a bunch of pictures for you, so get ready!*

you could do something simple on the wall, but give yourself a niche like this, and tile it w/the fancy glass mosiac. this way the entire shower wouldn't; be done.

I have black and white and marble in my master bath. w/cobalt accents.

    I still like that bathroom.

I'd suggest you go with charcoals, whites, grays, blacks, maybe different shapes or textures, and then bring in the color w/paint and art work. maybe a runner or towels. This way if you get tired of it, it's easy to change.

    something like this would work.

grays and blue grays penny rounds. textured wall tile

another Blue/gray subway tiles, charcoal herringbone shower floor, larger charcoal outside floors

    Or, what about this

you could do a 3x12 white subway in a stacked pattern, but pick a nice accent tile for the one wall

or, think about doing something like these, bring in some greenery, and some wood shelving, paint the wall

You may be able to do a soft aqua glass tile that works w/your granite color. bring in warmer gray floor tile.

This kenridge gray tile from Tilebar, (comes in a 12x24 tile or a chevron tile ) would actually work well w/your granite. Use that pennyround in the shower, or a black hex.

Rep;lace your GRANITE tops and have no "limit" on the look you want. I am not for niches..hate them. But I do love a repeat of counter top material for corner shelves ( 12 inch ) in the shower. I've never understood the need to highlight shampoo and shower gel.

Know too, that " a bad tile job" was probably not the source of damage. A bad waterprroof job on the shower beneath the tile ...is the more likely scenario by far.

Shower doors should hinge to a solid wall, but they swing in BOTH directions. I'd want that top frame gone, and a heavy glass.........: ) Meaning no slide , just fixed glass and a door.

As to a color in the tile? If you lean neutral, put the "color on the walls, in towels. Don't make the color a more permanent selection. Make certain you love the existing floor tile as well. Before you redo this.

Thank you for your suggestions! We will keep the granite. I don't mind the color and there's nothing wrong with the granite like there is with the tile. We will do 2 corner shelves, not niches.

And yes, the issue is what is beneath the tile. Our floor tiles are also bad. Some are cracked, the grout is wearing away in several places, and they move and make noises when we walk on them...so that all needs replaced too. Luckily we have a good tile guy who did a lot of tile work at my parents' house and actually does everything the right way and very well, so I know I don't need to worry about this happening again.

I think I might like a swing door better.

Tile...............and waterproofing are two different things. Laying floor tile, and having a proper substrate are also two different things. Often done by separate pros, contractor and his sub, for example. Just saying..... one portion of the job, truly has nothing to do with the other in either instance, other than quality work is necessary in all parts of process.

joanna, make sure you take pictures of each level of redo.

is he putting down a new subfloor? if you other tiles cracked, it's because they prob weren't installed over something rigid enough.

waterproofing in the shower? take pics at each juncture

I will definitely take progress photos of everything.

I have not met with him yet (hoping to this week), but he will replace everything that is damaged, causing issues, or just was not done right.

Our house was updated (kitchen, bathrooms, tile floors) a few years before we bought it, and it's obvious that whoever was hired did not do the work properly. We are also having issues with grout wearing away/cracking in certain areas of our kitchen, and I know it's because of whatever they did not do correctly underneath the tile. I chose my original wording poorly. I know it is not the tile but what is underneath that is causing all the issues. Very frustrating! We didn't think we would have to do any work to the kitchen or bathrooms for many years.

I sure don't want to sound like doom on Moms day...............but I smell bigger trouble. If the kitchen is the floor that is cracking and grout wearing sway? Your floors are not level, or inadequate prep......or who knows. Or god forbid a worse case scenario of structural supports below the kitchen.

We'll wish you much good luck.. Just make very certain you are not applying a bandage to an INFECTED wound : (

Stick to neutrals with the tile choices - whites and neutral grays, and then paint the walls a very soft shade of blue/green. That lets you change out the color anytime just by painting the walls again, and almost anything would work - blush, green, blue, white, yellow, etc.

We just finished ours: I love a niche. It’s not so much highlighting your shampoos as a pretty place to store them. The tub area is now painted, and I’ve ordered gorgeous Roman shades from Calico. So for our shower, part of the glass is fixed, then the door hinges on the wall side. I especially love our porcelain tile floor that looks like wood. We got all our stuff at Bedrosians for the shower. The quartzite was prefab which saved a ton. Have fun

Your bathroom looks really nice! I've been thinking about floor tiles like the ones you chose, and we will probably get a similar shower door as well. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Just ordered Roman shades, will post again when they’re installed
