What has your weather been like? I've had below average temps and very little rainfall for over a month here. And I have oaks and hackberries sitting side-by-side where one tree has baby leaves and the other just has buds that have swelled some but no pop. Leaf out across many varieties has been erratic, sugar maples included. Seems like many trees are waiting on a good thunderstorm, some warmer weather, warmer nights perhaps.

do you see anything else in the general area not leafed out ... and if not.. then it probably dead ..

that said .... not much lost waiting another month ... as the next proper planting time will be fall ...

if you really want some good info.. you could post a pic or two.. including the whole tree ... at the ground.. and include some relevant info on when planted.. how it was planted.. do you water them if new .... weather for last year.. drought.. bad winter.. etc ... you really havent given us much to guess on ...

If there's some problem that they can't leaf out, they still might sprout down low.

Lynne, much of Utah is in extreme to exceptional drought, as is western Colorado. We received 8 inches of liquid precip last year, 15 inches is normal. If you aren't providing supplemental moisture to the trees, the drought may be part of the problem. Leaf out is just beginning here in northern Colorado. Be patient, check your soil moisture and in a few weeks you'll see if you have a problem.
