Kitchen design input

This is my current layout - no uppers! Any thoughts appreciated.

A few things:

The island was going to be 74” square (12” overhang to seat 6) then I got nervous about the cost of stone counters so we made it smaller in width to accommodate laminate counters. This smaller island will seat 5.

THEN I was told my choice of a farmhouse copper sink won’t work with laminate. So losing another feature I have.

I’ve included my inspo pic, but this has uppers. So now I am not sure about doing white and wood. I’m starting to change my mind about painting the cabinets and thinking about going all wood.

Fill in the balance of the dimension, including the distances from the cabinets to the island as it really looks like this is too cramped already. Graph paper drawn to scale would be preferable.

Yes this definitely isn’t to scale - I have a graph paper drawn one with the original plan for the island. Sorry I should have posted that!

I like the new island dimensions. The square one was too big and there wouldn’t be enough aisle room between the kitchen and dining room. That said, the dining table is too big, especially with a step down and you don’t want anyone backing their chair off the step.

I would make sure your hood is 36”, as in your inspo pic, not 30” as in your plan. I would reconsider laminate. Perhaps just using marble or quartz for the island might fit your budget, but leaving a laminate for the outer corners. What is striking about the inspiration is the marble or quartz on the island ( and notice that the peripheral counters are not the same material). I vote for having outside counters white. They act as a backdrop so the wood island can star.

Agree with the above great input!!
I think I’d still keep the outer cabinets white. But wood would be pretty too.
I would certainly save up and do proper countertops. Laminate won’t last forever... you can look into the precut countertops in stone yards. Seem to be less pricey. But again I would not put laminate into a brand new beautifully designed space!
And then you get he copper sink back! If you still want it... :)

If you have a large island and people sitting on stools, there may not be room to move around the kitchen. I like 48” aisles for ease of movement with two people in the kitchen. If you omit upper cabinets, you will have to bend down to access everything and put it all away again. You can have heavy-duty roll-out shelving in the lower cabinets, but I like to have dishware and glasses in uppers near the dishwasher so I can put the clean stuff directly into the cabinets while standing next to the dishwasher...that’s the majority of what is in the dishwasher.

IMO there is no reason to forgo the sink you love look at polished granite there are many affordable ones I will say a copper sink is a lot more upkeep than stainless so be prepared for that. All the base cabinets should be drawers . The island was too wide and yes to as wide a walkway space everywhere as possible and from counter edge to wall behinf stools should be 60” If you post a to scale plan you will get lots of help here

Wow thank you everyone!!! The dining room table is not confirmed yet - to be honest I will probably wait to order or have one built. I can’t believe how helpful you all are. So thankful I found this app!

I will have to double check how much room there is to do a 36” hood there. All appliances will be black stainless steel but I am meeting with a cabinet maker to make a shiplap hood instead of a black stainless hood.
