Exterior Makeover - Paint

We are ready to do a front exterior makeover of our suburban home in Colorado, starting with painting. I'm interested in color suggestions. Shingles are currently black. Lots of beige, gray, and brown in the neighborhood; although we do have a yellow home next to us. I've considered reds, creamy whites, earthy greens. I would like to tone down the odd little window pop outs over the garage,, so have considered only painting some of the trim a different color. Our interior colors are warm and cozy.
Additional context... Eventually we will move on to landscaping, which we hope will include removal of the shrubs and adding a front patio area.
Thanks for your suggestions!

    Some ideas

One way to disguise the window "pop outs" is to paint all the window trim the same as the body of the house.

What color is the trim on the windows? If you paint the rest of the house that color, including the garage door, I think it would look wonderful with the brick.

Agreed judianna29. I would paint the window surround on the first floor all one color, too. So I wonder about just going all one color.

The brown is pretty @Flo Mangan. Thanks for the ideas. We have had arborist tell us the evergreen is solid, but I hear you. It would also help us with snow melt since the house faces north.

I"d do everything one color...including the battens. You house isn't a Tudor.

judianna20 this is validating. Thanks so much. I had considered white/cream as an option. And all one color to tone down the quirkiness of the trim.

    That door is beautiful.

Heather-it looks like your windows are white? If so, avoid cream as trim. Or pick a “cream” that has a bit more color. If you can paint your windows, that would help tone them down. Painting the body and batten trim boards, trim and facia the same color is a good idea. Paint the garage door same color too so it isn’t a feature.

On your picture, it looks like the tree is actually touching the roof. It is definitely leaning towards the house. I would also have that removed first, before doing anything else. I would stay away from the brown tones, since your roof is black. Dark Grays or sage greens would look very nice

That tree is a several ton weight laying over your home. It is a huge problem. Please get a good professional to remove it carefully. Pines a fairly shallow rooted too so one big wind snd rain storm and you will have a total loss of your home and contents. My sister lives in a piney woods. In a bad storm, one pine cracked off half way up tree and fell on roof. Of course it was middle of night and rain was streaming into the house. It took over 6 months for them to rebuild and in today’s build market might take a year. This is serious. Back to colors, I like sage green with your home too but you have best assessment we can’t see the true color of your brick. Best of luck to you.

All concerns on the tree heard and appreciated!

    Any thoughts on red?

A deep orange would work better than red if the brick has as much yellow as it looks like in your photo.

Some option to hide window pop

Oh that rendering helps a lot, celerygirl. Thanks so much!

Good thought on the white windows, Flo Mangan. Not sure I could do orange. But the above rendering makes me want to lean lighter anyway. Not that color, but just something to brighten. It makes me realize how dark our entry is.

You also can use the window stickers as a decoration tool. Any design elements can be used on your custom stickers

If you don't know how to choose the right stickers by your requirements, here is an article to tell you the answer.

HOW TO LEARN STICKERS FROM THE SHAPES?

We have decided to go with either SW Creamy or SW Westhighland White for the body of the house, with sage trim. We have tried out SW Clary Sage and SW Svelte Sage. Both look good at certain times of day, and slightly off at others. Clary Sage is just a beautiful color, so I'm tempted to go with it. Any other suggestions for sages?

In other news, you will all sleep more soundly knowing that the tree is gone. 😄

First, so happy tree is out! Gosh that was scary. Second colors. I have looked at your choices and after looking at their color DNA I think I know why these greens aren’t working. I would try going with Westhighland White with BM Saybrook Sage. You other green choices have more yellow and Saybrook Sage has more Chroma (think graying) and that is better combo with body color Westhighland White. Try a sample of BM Saybrook and see if it works better in your light. I wouldn’t go with SW Creamy.

I temporarily painted my garage door SW Creamy while waiting for my house painter. I couldn't look at them peeling anymore. Anyhow, while I have used SW Creamy in the interior successfully, it was a tiny bit too warm on my fading sage colored house. It was a good exercise to help me determine my final house color.

I ended up using SW Alabaster. It's very forgiving. It has just a little bit less warmth than SW Creamy, yet handles the warmer color of my warm stone base nicely. It's not as stark a white as Pure White. It's just a hint warmer and coordinates with you brick base.

I ended up painting the body of the house SW Alabaster in a Satin and the trim in SW Alabaster in a semi-gloss. It picks up the trim without shouting at you. If you want to go all white, this is the white color and technique that I would suggest.

Have you considered painting the brick? Lots of people hate painted brick. I had a home that had painted brick and it was the easiest surface to maintain. A simple power wash and it was done. I love painted brick. To each his own.

I like Saybrook! I will look at it. Our painter uses SW so I might need to find an equivalent.

I would LOVE to paint or lime wash the brick. Hubby won't go for it. I'm wondering if I can change his mind once we get through the initial color change.

Will also consider Alabaster for the body. That was in the top 5. 😄

We are waiting on our painter but also planning on SW Westhighland White for our house exterior. We also have a black roof. Hope you post final photos!

I'm confused about what's being painted the sage color?

    Sage trim.

Westhighland has a touch more chroma so it will read a bit softer than Alabaster. I strongly recommend getting BM Saybrook Sage. There is no color match in SW because BM has a proprietary base formula. These sage greens can go really wrong. For the incremental cost for your trim to get a right color, in the overall scheme of things it’s small price to pay. Your painter should be able to get a discount. I looked for match and the closest is PPG 1124-4 Light Sage. Home Depot carries this paint. It is .9 different and that can be noticeable to the discriminating eye. Hope that helps.

Heather. Here is comparison of BM Saybrook Sage and PPG-1124 Light Sage. Hope this helps. Of course, sampling one your light is important.

As an aside, here is a local house I passed recently that I liked. I dont know if this was it exactly, and we don't plan to paint all the trim like they did. But it's the closest I have seen...

I am glad you are finding colors that you like. As to the tree, you may not be far off. I wont say it kept me awake at night, but, a couple weeks ago, we had some wind that took down some branches (not a pine), and I actually thought about that big leaning tree in your post.

Oh that's funny! We are now safe and sound.
