Massive failure this year

Out of the nine cannas that I over-wintered, only two survived. I'm not sure what happened. Maybe they were too wet when I put them away. I also recall we got a really cold snap this Winter and I even remember thinking at the time it might mean canna disaster. Guess so.

My favorite one, Cleopatra, was one of the survivors and a NOID red one that has green foliage.

The two showing growth here in April are the only two that made it.

I guess I will just have to buy some new ones!

Haha! Yes, I think the strong man may have saved that red canna!

I just got back from my annual "plant shopping" trip on the Western Slope of Colorado. My uncle is a bit of a canna nerd as well. In fact, the Cleopatra came from him a couple of year ago. This year, he told me he had over 100 cannas. He kindly gave me five already growing ones, including a Bengal which is one of the ones I lost. He also gave me Tropicana, Black Knight, Wyoming and one more I can't remember. Hooray!

That's too bad. Every so often something like this happens. Just when we think we have the over wintering thing wired, disaster occurs. I'm glad Cleopatra made it. I had one casualty out of five this winter. I don't know why except it was the weakest one I had.

Have fun shopping for more. That's the only bright side is that you can try some that are new to you or replace favorites you lost. If you find a good place to mail order let me know. I've only seen basic cannas that I have already at the nurseries.

It's true, sandyslopes. All part of the great experiment that is gardening, right? This year was one of losses for many of my gardening friends and family. I was just visiting my uncle and we totaled quite a few losses in his garden. Odd year.

So sorry for this loss...... I know I would be upset about losing that many hosta.......we spend so much money on our plants and take such care of them, but we can’t control Mother Nature that’s for sure........I see one Canna that made it has a toy figure in it, maybe that’s the secret........ oh, if it was only that simple! I am joking,of course——have fun shopping for new ones, and show us what you buy!

If even your Uncle lost some, then you know it wasn't you. Your trolley in and out of the garage is a good method, so yeah, just one of those years. I'm glad you were able to get some more from him. Bengal Tiger is a beauty!

No he didn't lose any. He is King of Canna. He has perfected his storage method. But it's all good. He is a very good sharer!

Very late here. Usually end of July. I get a great show all the way through September. Then it's time to put them away.

When they reach a certain height they start blooming? Is it x amount of time since breaking dormancy they start blooming? What are the factors that determine blooming?
