its heavy plantaginea ... so it can take a lot of sun .. but if it blooms properly in that spot.. then its probably getting enough sun.. and all that said.. its coloring is very slight and late to develop .. especially in shade ...

in other words.. to be clear.. the answer to your question is .. yes ...

I've never had much variegation on my Guacamole either. It's primarily green.

I have two Guacamole- one in full blazing sun from early morning to sunset and a second that sees shade from about 2pm on.

I looked at them yesterday after seeing this post and the one that sees less sun does indeed have more easily visible markings.

I checked my old photos of Guacamole. It was a good grower for me, but the coloring was more subtle than some. The flowers are really nice, though. If you want something like Guacamole with a lot of contrast and a good grower, try Paradigm.

If you want to see photos of other hosta, including Guacamole, go to hostalibrary.org. They have photos of most hosta that are available and many that are not available any longer.

improper flowering would just be a lesser show ..

as i recall.. a mature plant can put out bazillions of flowers in a good year ... somewhere near august ... maybe a little earlier than plantaginea ...

im not sure poppas is guacamole ...

solbeerg started all this .... these all came from one mother .. all kinds of sports or what not.. i dont have all that committed to memory ... im sure you can look it up on the fact page off the library ... there should be a green plant listed... the green one might be holy mole ..

Holy Mole is just an Avocado by another name.

You will be able to tell when it blooms. It has a nice fragrance and perfectly shaped blooms. I also think Erin is right about the color being more pronounced later in the season. The first photo was taken in April. The second was taken in July

Even though Guacamole can take the sun, I think the variegation shows up more in partial shade or partial sun. Here is one of mine with the photo taken in June:

Bk, wouldn’t Stained Glass also have the very fragrant flower, as well as Avocado? All coming from the plantaginea lineage.........or am I wrong??
