Peanuts?

Interesting what people used to survive, those legume tubers must have been very important before more advanced agriculture since they were a perennial you could dig up whenever needed. Probably a common "weed" in some areas now.

There was also a bit in there about them eating the black soot on corn cobs! We always tossed the whole ear when it had smut on it, she was very sure to say to only eat the smut on the cobs, not from the stalk..and they used to suck on the green stalks because the juice was sweet..it's a very interesting read...I like reading about old harvest and preservation from different people and areas.

I remember reading about a breeding program that was attempting to produce improved tuber size. If I can find that again, I'll post a link here. American ground nuts are mainly found in the more temperate climates of the U.S. South & East Coast regions.

Edit: There was a breeding program in Louisiana State University. A promising cultivar from that program was LA85-034, it might me worth a search to find a source. The vines when in bloom are pretty enough to be grown as an ornamental. My climate does not appear to be ideal (which is the reason this bean freak hasn't already grown them) but after seeing the flowers, I'm tempted to try them here regardless.

Oikos has done quite a bit of searching for ground nut varieties..he has several that are very large as compared to the historical varieties....wrong time of year to order, but if you're wanting to try some, here's the link...

Unfortunately the guy at Oikos has retired, he looks like he had an absolutely unique selection of native and wild type plants. You can tell his passion just by reading through the website. I wonder if anybody else has multiple types of "groundnut" for sale?
