What reliable hosta nurseries are left after some have closed?

We lost Hallsons and Made in the Shade and a couple others I used to patronize. I'm almost ready to throw in the towel on Paisley Print (no pips YET), Rainbow's End, Ripple Effect, Virginia Reel, Dinner Mint and another little guy I can't remember. Some of these look like they started to pip and then halted in mid-pip, some look like nothing was doing. I tried to dig around in the soil to see if there were viable roots, but I was afraid to injure if there were roots.

Also, has anyone heard of "Happy Hollow Hosta Nursery" here in a suburb of Baltimore (Cockeysville)? Are they any good? Do they test for HVX?

Hosta Hideaway was packed full of nice Hosta. They did have one mislabeled - "One Last Dance" on a center variegated Hosta, but I think that was on the sign and not actually in the pot. I visited there a couple years ago and posted on it here.

I have ordered from Hornbakers, they ship gallon sized hostas for no extra charge. Also ordered from Land of The Giants, Plant Delights Nursery, Naylors, MapleCreek day lilies (sell hostas too), Uniquely Hostas and New Hampshire Hostas. Have had good luck with all of them.

It says owner is ill, but recovering and daughter has taken on most of work right now. Sounds good. You decide. I just gave you some information I found.

Pandora, I spoke with the proprietor of Happy Hollow in Cockeysville today. She suggested I call Hosta Hideaway in York Springs, PA. They have lots of hostas, they said, originally from Walters Gardens (when I asked if they test for HVX), but they have no website. I'm hoping to go there early next week with my friend, as she has a kitten who needs to go back to the Adams County SPCA for her second shots and HH is only 20 minutes from there. There is also a spectacular annuals nursery in the area, Taylor's Nursery. When we drove to Gettysburg to get the kitten spayed a few weeks ago, we visited Taylor's and ended up cramming my car full of their gorgeous plants on the way home.

Esther, excellent. I'm very happy you found a place for a great road trip. You made me curious, but Hosta Hideaway is 5.5 hours for me. Lol a bit much. It doesn't get much better than a friend, a pet, and loads of plants.

It doesn’t seem to be a good year for hosta orders. The ones I remember off the top of my head:

Land of the Giants is not accepting orders due to health issues.

Hostas Direct has been closed since 2019 - as far as I can tell he still hopes to open again.

Green Mountain is unable to keep up and may not be accepting orders for the remainder of 2021 - but do check since they may be able to increase staff and catch up on orders.

Naylor Creek has a message saying their schedule is very full for April & May but rather than close the shore they’ll keep accepting orders. New orders won’t be shipped until June.

Walter’s Gardens is HVX free though? I wish I knew of a trustworthy local source but I live in high desert country.

Add Sebright to your list. I am waiting for my order which is due next week but I know I will get large plants that are disease free and grow well in my yard. Very nice people always willing to answer questions and yes even though they are in Oregon, they get the plants to me in Ohio in tremendous shape and I don't have to worry that I will get broken leaves, etc.

I just want to say again——-that Hornbaker’s hostas are fabulous!!! This is the second year i have ordered from them. steved steveduggins turned me on to them when hape posted pictures of a received order maybe two years ago. I have had the opportunity to speak to Marcie in the office. I mentioned what nice sized hostas they ship. She told me that customers receive the same 1 gallon size that they ship to their vendors. They are shipped with the roots still in dirt with wet toweling wrapped around the roots then plastic around that. All packed into a box with packing type straw, not real straw. All came in great condition...... beautiful plants. They also have lovely garden grounds and even a beautiful barn building they built for weddings and other special occasions. It’s to look at the website.....beautiful pics.......plus of course the hostas!!
