Seedling Surprises and Some Registered Ones

There were exciting surprises in the seedling beds again today. I'll show those first, and follow it up some registered daylilies.

Surprise #1 was this lavender bitone out of Coco's Curiosity. This is the ffo. It has lavender petals, and the sepals are outlined in a lighter lavender with cream in the middle. The sepals are what make it unique. We'll have to see if they stay this way, or if it's an effect of the rain and bug spray.

Surprise #2 was this 7-inch applique out of Integrated Logistics and a UF parent that is not an applique. It reminds me of Hanson's John Karl Seager. The color is even prettier than the photo shows.

I was so pleased with the ffo on this one. It's *exy Samantha x Bubblegum Delicious. It has the white edge I was going for and a small white watermark. The bloom is a 6-incher, and I'm loving the angel wings. The single fan split into two last month, and each of the fans have two scapes.

My favorite seedling from last year started blooming today. It's Dancing Flamingo x Bubblegum Delicious. The 8-inch bloom is looking more voluptuous than last year's. The plant increased from 3 fans last year to 10 now, and most of the fans have double scaped.

Now for the registered cultivars.

This is the first bloom on Bluegrass Shadows that looks good. The previous four blooms have been splotchy with bad sepals. The color looks more reddish than it did last year. It has more gold on the edge than this photo shows.

Applique ffo

This is the best bloom of Crowning Fire so far. The previous two were a total splotch fest with both petals and sepals.

Jamaican Love - I sold most of this clump two falls ago and planted the three remaining fans in another spot. Amazingly, it has two scapes with four-way branching and 20 buds. It never did anything like that in the past 17 years.

I really like all your seedlings, but especially the last one. Sounds like it has some good habits too, with Such a gorgeous color! Bluegrass Shadows is pretty and always love Stenciled Inf.

Nancy - Yes the Dancing Flam. X BD is a fast grower and has good stats. I like everything about it, and of course it's pink, my favorite color. Last year, its first year to bloom, it had bud counts of 18-21. I'm not sure what this season's overall bud counts will be yet. Last year the scapes were 31 inches, and this year they are 36. There's lateral branching on almost every scape.

Lovely seedlings Debra. You should be very happy with the results so far. Surpise #1 is so pretty with the lavende . Dancing Flamingo x Bubblegum Delicious seedling has a nice green throat which stands out against the color of the bloom. It looks to have many more buds yet to open. Wow, 3 to 10 fans is terrific.

All the registered daylilies are very pretty and Sammie is so cute.

Nice seedlings! My favorites are the first one and Dancing Flamingos X Bubblegum Delicious. Of the registered varieties, Stenciled Infusion and Watermelon Summer. Sammie is adorable too!

And by the way, Dearest Valentine looks wonderful this spring. I can't wait to see it bloom.

Debra, I meant to say, Jamaican Love opened its 1st blooms today. Like yours, it has a couple of scapes with nice branching. I took a pic but still on my camera. Really pretty blooms!

Hoosier Nan - Glad to know Dearest Valentine is looking good for you! Rosie Cotton's Ribbons has scapes coming. So far it hasn't increased. I think it gets too shaded out by its neighbors. I need a better spot for it.

My favorite seedling is Dancing Flamingo X Bubblegum Delicious. I really like the color and the edge. All the Bluegrass Shadows and Watermelon summer. and always, Fighting Fire. Sammie is such a pretty one. I like his colors and he looks very calm.

Sammie looks perfectly content surveying the garden..........Watermelon Summer is one I had my eye on last year. But most of the Bell daylilies I've been interested in seemed to show fading as the day wore on, so I've not bothered with any yet. I'll watch your pics of it as the season goes on to see how it holds up for you in the heat........Of your seedlings, I'm in the mood for the delicate lavender of Coco x. Nice form and edge on it too..........Maryl

I can see why the Dancing Flamingo seedling is a favorite. That color is fabulous! The color of Bluegrass Shadows is really pretty. Mine has buds but yet to open-new this spring. Like Maryl, I have looked at Watermelon Summer as well but am also holding off on it. Lovely colors showing on it.

Maryl - That's interesting that the Bell daylilies you've had were faders. The two I've grown for years, Princess Diary and Once Upon Dream have always held up pretty well when temps were in the mid- to high 90s. But they do get shade from about 3 p.m.

Kate - I got Watermelon Summer as a single fan. Because of grub problems, I don't know that a single fan will survive. At least I've already crossed Watermelon Summer with a couple of my seedlings. I'm looking forward to seeing how Bluegrass Shadows does for you.
