What has been happening here

I'm still working on the front bed and dealing with the cicadas bombing me as I try to plant/ mulch and the excessive heat. Yesterday I stayed in and worked on inside projects. I did add many perennials which includes coneflowers, penstemon, phlox,yarrow,blanket flowers, lobella,bee balm, sedum,globe flower,and a couple of others. I was trying to find a white phlox but no luck so far. I do like to add a few whites mixed in with other colors. I need to stay away from the local nursery. I've tried twice to take photos but the cicadas dive bomb the camera and me so I gave up. I don't want to trip and fall while holding the camera. No rain although it was predicted for yesterday and today.

I have 4 daylilies that still have shown no scapes (haven't checked this morning yet)- Tahiti Sweetie, Earth And All Stars, Isle Of Patmos, and the what I think is the second clump of Spring Mystique. Those that have sent up scapes are Clown Parade, Spring Mystique, Allegheny Skyline, Dearest Valentine, Rocks Cry Out. I am noticing a lot of yellow foliage over the past couple of days on the daylilies. Not sure if the extreme heat, well water or just the natural transplant die back is causing this.Still looking for a couple more daylilies. Not sure if I want UF or Round. Still mulling that over.

Marley (our cat) has shown improvement and is due to go to the vet the end of this week.

Don't know if it will make you feel better, but I have not seen scapes yet on Tahiti Sweetie, but should any day I would think. You have gotten a lot done! Good news about Marley! Funny, my white phlox must have died out just leaving its pink seedlings. I have been wanting to replace it for 2 years and not found white here either.

My favorite white phlox is David. I grew it for several years until it died during our three-year drought. I got a new one from Bluestone this year, but it's very tiny. Glad to hear Marley is doing better! The scapes here are just starting on Dearest Valentine. Except for the daylilies planted next to my house, the rest are blooming a bit later than usual.

It sounds as if you are gardening under duress with the cicadas, the heat and the lack of rain. Ouch! Hopefully, the rain will come and prompt the lazy ones to send up scapes since that is their payment for space in the garden. It sounds as if you are creating a lovely space, Julia.

Love all those plants you have selected! I know you will create a lovely venue for them. Totally wish I could transfer some of this rain your way. My zinnia seeds are probably washed away and the small plants that are up will drown! I will need to reseed them. Looking forward to your new gardens!

So glad to hear the news about Marley.

That's something about the Cicadas. We've had outbreaks in the past, but I don't remember them being in such numbers that they attacked me. Sounds icky......It's been chaos here between the weather, new plants and life, so I missed your post about your fur baby, Marley. I'm happy he is doing better from whatever was wrong with him........As to your daylily decision, I always go for round of course (preferably with edges), but even I have allowed myself a couple of the UF's, so I guess it's down to whatever appeals to you personally. The fun part is always buying. The hard part is planting and maintaining........Maryl

The cicadas never hatched out here this year, and swarms of them have attacked me inthe past.

Nancy: Thanks for the info on your Tahiti Sweetie. I checked last years photo and it started blooming in NY garden end of July. So hopefully I see something soon.

I did find a white Phlox at the same nursery we got our trees from this spring. It is called Fashionably Early Crystal. And then of course I saw Galaxy Blue Agapanthus so picked that up too. As I've said, I should not go into a nursery. Even the nursery personnel were complaining about the cicadas as the little buggers were flying around.. I waited till this evening to plant as it is so hot and muggy here and still no rain. The cicadas are also less of nursance when the sun starts to set . Hopefully we have only another couple of weeks of this and they should be gone.

I'm already thinking maybe I should have made the front bed bigger. LOL.

I heard a cicada last night for the 1st time since they have been talking about them. Notice I said "a cicada". I don't miss them, I don't quite get the excitement about cicadas.

While we may not see these cicada for 17 years, they seem to have a cicada for about every year. 3 yr, 5 yr. 7 yr. Be easier to note the years we don't have them. May not harm plants, but they seem to be out to get me. Yes, I am ranting LOL!
