Reds Rule on Tuesday

This is the second try on this post that refused to upload before noon. While most of my daylily blooms are still looking horrid with splotchiness, several reds wowed me this morning.

Woman in Red looked so velvety in person.

Diver Down's blooms seem so much bigger than last year's.

Fighting Fire has improved since I posted its picture.

Red Heartthrob still makes my heart beat faster.

Bow Tie Affair just hasn't been able to fully open this season. This bloom may be as good as it gets.

Ocean Wild ffo - The bloom is smaller than I expected.

And now for some seedlings. First the ones with maiden blooms.

Second one to bloom from the Xexy Samantha X Bubblegum Delicious cross. While the first was rose pink, this one is lavender pink.

Second one to bloom in the Dancing Flamingo x pink Uf cross. This one's color doesn't grab me as much as the first, but it does have the UF form that was my goal. The bloom is 9.5 inches.

Second to bloom in the Carolina Pale Face X Dearest Valentine cross. The bloom is a 6.5 inch cream pink. I like the yellow edge and the angel wings.

Here's my Razor Sharp X Spacecoast Night Vision kid. This is its third year to bloom, and it has improved its stats quite a bit. I removed seedling on both sides to give it more light. The bud count has gone from 8-9 last year to the teens. The best scapes have at least 17 and 18 buds this time. The toothy edge is less pronounced today because of the cool temps.

Your reds are all pretty, but I think Woman In Red is my favorite. Color looks saturated and that thin white/white edge is the icing on the cake........Your pink seedlings always interest me but the lavender pink one is my pick for the day.................Maryl

What an amazing group of reds! I especially love it when they have white petal edges and watermarks.

That's a great group of seedlings too. I especially like the second one. I am getting more and more fond of ufs. I love the green throat with the pink coloring. The last one has really rich coloring!

All reds are so pretty! I like the color and watermark on Red Heartthrob but the first one, Woman in Red with its white edge is my favorite. Sorry I can't visit every day but why your daylilies looking bad? Hope it improves soon.

Love all the seedlings! Esp the pink UF, so nice!

Nat - A series of things have prevented nice blooms over the past 2.5 weeks. First, we had much cooler than usual temperatures. Second, there have been rounds of rain that have battered and beat up the blooms. And, third, there are the bugs that cause splotchiness and misshapen sepals and petals.

The reds are gorgeous! I like the white edges against the vivid red. The seedlings are looking great. How exciting it must be to see them every day!

You seem to find the best reds. Probably your fault I feel in need of more reds, LOL. My favorite is Woman in red though. I like Ocean Wild too, and I think I like the last seedling best.

Nancy - I find the best reds because I scour websites looking for them. You do need more reds to balance out all those purples. LOL It looks like everyone so far likes Woman in Red the best, and it's prettier than my photo shows. While the bloom is a head turner, of the four Dan Hansen reds I added two falls ago, it has the weakest plant habit, and the flower for me is not as large as registered. Kara Louise and Twentieth Century Fox have the best branched and budded scapes of his. They are the two reds I would recommend at this point.

While I love the look of Ocean Wild in the early morning, I was disappointed to see by noon there was no differentiation in the eye color. It was all dark purple.

It's no surprise you like the last seedling the best. It's a purple, and you seem to favor that color.

How lovely they are, Debra! I vote for Woman in Red too. It is such a pretty one, but Fighting Fire looks great too. I like your UF seedling. It reminds me of Neon Flamingo.

I used to have phases for daylilies, a different color or form every year. Seem to have settled in on huge form and purple. Last year I decided I needed more true reds after seeing all yours. Too bad about Ocean Wild, that eye really makes it special.

Nancy - Huge form and purples are some of my favorites too! I love pinks the best, but it's hard to find pinks anymore that look better than the ones I already have. I went through a phase where I added patterned daylilies, and now I'm thinking about getting rid of a lot of them.
