As far as I know, there's no point to it, unless the spent flowers are really ugly: the following year's flowering won't be affected if you do nothing. And if you deadhead the rose, you lose the chance of hips, which many roses set.

I don't. I think it can make a plant that does not form hips look neater, but I've never had the time. Obviously, one would leave hip formers to enhance their beauty. I can't seem to deadhead all the repeat bloomers. I'm making a go at it this year.

I do not dead head any of my roses, and the repeat bloomers don't seem to mind - they keep blooming anyway, sometimes right alongside of the hips forming. "You must always dead head spent blooms", IMO, is one of the canards which stop most people in the general public from ever considering trying to grow roses.

Back to your question - I cannot think of even one reason why anyone would "dead head" a once blooming rose. Hips are beautiful.

One reason to deadhead a once or even a repeat blooming roses is if the receptacle starts to rot and it spreads down the pedicel and gets past the point you can snap the dead flower off and starts spreading down the actual cane of the plant. That is the only time I dead head my once blooming roses.

I wish all roses made hips. Ispahan here does not.

Jeri, I prune my roses fall through the end of winter, and they bloom just fine. Summer pruning after flowering is also fine with me, it's just that I tend to have other things to do that time of year.
