Seriously you have a huge amount of wall space in that room

A more richly-colored, patterned rug might help create more of a "room" feeling. I'd look for something large for over the buffet (like an antique plate rack or a large painting or print), but I wouldn't fill the remaining wall space with anything else. Making your window more of a focal point would also help.

You have a very unique house! If the sitting room picture is indicative of how the home is decorated, then I think the rug you have in the dining room is all wrong. It is too contemporary for the furniture, chandelier, etc. Aside from the obvious need for something besides primer white on the walls, the first thing that struck me was that the one wall you have to work with should have something besides that small mirror on it. I would be looking for some sort of appropriate artwork to add color and interest.

I would start by painting your chairs white or a fun color, then remove 4 of them from the room (unless you are a family of 10 for dinner every night). Then I would remove the mirror and replace with large colorful art. Paint room (look at SW Topsail if you like blues).

Paint walls to complement a new colorful rug, add framed art even on a small wall and decorate buffet.
