Thursday's Treasures

There were some nice clumps today, and some cultivars have fewer splotches now.

Bill Norris on its tallest and best-budded scapes in at least 18 years.

Buddy's Black Eye with scapes the registered height this year.

Jungle Queen with shorter scapes than normal - a sure sign grubs got to it.

Here's a new seedling out of Jungle Queen and Applique. It has a nice tall scape with 18 buds. I didn't care for the ffo, but it looks pretty good today.

Aerial Applique

Dancing Flamingo had its first clean bloom of the season.

Endless Beauty is the sib to Dancing Flamingo. It had it's first clean bloom in three years today. It was a bonus from Floyd Cove. By the way it's never multiplied, but it sets seed easier than Dancing F, so I keep it. Dancing Flamingo is a very slow multiplier.

Grandma's Smile ffo

Flyng Blue Dragon ffo - I had this one a few years ago, but lost it in a pot one winter. I saw the price was so low on the Lily Auction this winter that I bought it again. I hope it will fare better in the ground. I do like it a lot.

Ocean Wild - This is a better picture than the first one I posted. We'll see how long the eye holds today. On the first bloom, the eye just looked all dark purple by noon. It was a particularly muggy day. Maybe that had something to do with it.

A few more in the comments!

Debra, I really like the seedling out of Jungle Queen. Everything about it is a winner to me. I hope it does well. Jungle Queen itself would be my second favorite of these.

Carolina Pale Face - This photo shows the true color better than any of my other photos.

Bluegrass Shadows had great depth of color and fantastic edge today.

Early White Seedling group shot from yesterday. Notice the purple seedling in the background could not open until much later in the day.

Blue Jay Tapestry - Not the best bloom on this one, but certainly one of the bluest eyes it's ever shown.

FFO on a White Tooth kid that I liked. While most toothies still are showing any teeth, this seedling has several on its edge. I like that it has good color and showing crispation.

I had decided to cull this seedling, but it showed such pretty colors this morning that I'm rethinking that. It's Turquoise Temple x Slipped My Disco.

This four-year old seedling really improved its stats this year. In the past, it's regularly had 12 buds per scape. I took out the seedling next to it, and this year it has bud counts of 14-21 (several having 18-19 buds), and the scapes are 36 inches tall. It's (Alan Lane Agin X Cosmic Sensation) x Gypsy Cats. Hoosier Nancy is right that it's ridiculous to give up on seedlings at year three. It has 13-14 fans at this time. I've been using it as a bridge plant, and I still don't know that I'll register it because the flower is smaller than I like and the white edge so thin.

    That's all for now!

Bill Norris does look great. The Jungle Queen seedling is beautiful! Bluegrass Shadow and flying Blue Dragon look so good, and I really like both Dancing Flamingo and its sibling, Endless Beauty. I particularly like the White Tooth seedling. Nice post, Debra.

Debra: I assume Bill Norris would be a more front of the gardenbed planting? I see it is registered at 29".

Jungle Queen is quite the bloom. Beautiful color and I can see the "kid" looks like its parent. I love daylilies with watermarks so Carolina Pale Face is something I would buy. Wonderful group again Debra. Looks like things are turning a corner.

BTW, Dearest Valentine has 9 fans and 5 scapes so far. it will be awhile before it blooms. Foliage is still a lighter green than when I first planted it. Perhaps transplanting is causing this.

Bill Norris is looking good. I really like Dancing Flamingo and Oceans Wild too. Your seedlings look great and I am glad you are getting better scapes. We have one getting ready to bloom that has a wonderful face but I was not sure it had the bud count we needed to register. This year it has 5 way branching and over 20 buds. Some just need more time than others.

Dancing Flamingo has such pretty color. Bluegrass Shadows has a great edge. Mine bloomed today but early hard rain damaged it-the edge was intact in places and shows promise. Ocean Wild is so vibrant.

Julia - I don't think of Bill Norris's 29 inches as a front-of-bed daylily. I would say that is mid- or back of the bed if what you have in front are 24-26 inches. It used to always be 24-25 inches here, that's because grubs were eating the roots. I've put enough grub killer on it for two years that it's performing like it should now. One of the scapes is 32, another two at 30, and some of them are 26.

Thanks for the clarification on the height Debra. How is the bloom substance? I'm trying to find a yellow, round and not too short. one with good bloom substance that doesn't melt in the heat or rain.

Julia - Bill Norris has good substance and is rainfast.

I always liked Bill Norris. I almost lost it a couple of years ago, dropped to only 1 fan. Not multiplied much but looks much healthier. Mine has not bloomed yet. I don't guess I consider Bill a front of the border daylily, but I have many shorter ones. Yours looks wonderful, Debra, I look forward to mine being a nice clump. I always rebloomed til i moved it. I love Flying Blue Dragon, and Flying Trapeze. Bluegrass Shadows looks especially good today. I hope Ocean Wild held its color today, that really has an amazing eye. Glad you did not cull that seedling. It is very nice.

Nancy - Bill Norris always used to rebloom here too. Then it started only blooming on a couple of fans, and I didn't get rebloom. It has at least one instant rebloom scape this time. Ocean Wild still had it's color at 2 p.m., but the inner lighter purple color had faded a lot by 4 p.m. Thanks for the comment on the seedling. And thanks for the comment on Flying Tapeze, but I don't have that one.

I don't know how I typed Flying Trapeze, supposed to be Dancing Flamingo. Must be losing it, sob...
