If the leaves ever have a purple tint then that in combination with the tinting of the flowers points to Lonicera japonica repens. Otherwise then it is just some other version of L. japonica other than 'Halliana'.

Thank you so much Embothrium. I have been observing it for the last few days and I think you are absolutely right. It is a purpurea. I also just found a old picture. This mystery is solved.

I am noticing something interesting, but perhaps not surprising to you. The halls' honeysuckle is on a north wall, is blooming profusely and has no discernable scent sadly. Does honeysucle need a lot of sun to release its scent? The purpurea is in sun all the time.

fragrance can vary year to year ... and it doesnt surprise me on a rather new transplant ...

my mock orange which i can usually smell from a hundred feet away in a slight breeze ... had almost no fragrance this season ... and i sure as heck dont know why ... should i blame a mild winter... the early heat.. with a return to a cold MI spring .. etc.. etc.. etc ... its one of the mysteries of the garden over time... [and i should mention.. it was an incredible flower show in number ... but not in smell.. go figure...]...

Ken_adrian, this is very informative. I also bought a mock orange this year (a small philadelphus coronarius) which is flowering but does not seem to have much fragrance. It is heartening to know these kind of things happen, especially with young plants and sometimes even with mature plants and it is not unique to my garden :)
