could you give us some history of the plant .. and a pic of the whole plant ...if outside.. big city name ....

with nothing else to go on.... it looks like at some time.. it was planted too deep.. and the trunk is stained ...

Hi Ken,

The ficus is about 9 years old, it was re-potted this summer in bonsai soil mix at the same level as it was when it came from the store. The temperature in Ontario in high twenties, it has plenty indirect light during the day.

I am not certain what the dark brown marks are, roots are healthy there is no rot.

On another note, have you guys seen anything like this before?

It is a large growth under in the root system. is it removable/ re-plantable?

i was thinking tree in teh ground.. not a 9 year potted plant.. lol ...

i dont know what the nodes are.. if they are nodes ... words matter... i ought not confuse anyone ...

Thanks so much! Nature really is interesting, definitely learned something new today. the storage mass is almost as big as the plant itself! So if I cut it off can I re-pot it and re-grow itself into another plant or it is only good for compost? The grafted part had some issues and died off even though it had a lot of foliage. I took all the parts off that were still alive and propagated them but the trunk now I am not sure if it will make it without any leaves. It has the same dark marks as the other one and is green under but has not pushed any growth yet since end May.

I will do the scratch test for the other one, fingers cross no mold!
