Darn deer. I had deer in NY eat the foliage down to nubs just when the daylilies were emerging from winter. Deer here too and so far (knock on wood) they have remained in the back area.

Tall Dark Stranger has really put on a show for you this year. Really nice color. How has Exotic Starfish done for you? it is a beauty. Garden pics are great with so much color. Lovely post Kate.

BTW, what did you add to your "Julia" bed? I'm always on the lookout for a perennial I haven't tried and hardy for this area.

I like the feathered pattern in Pick Up Line, and Vatican City is an old one I'd heard about. Thanks for the tip about it not being colorfast as the day progresses......Your beds of daylilies are a temptation for the human eye as well as the mouth of a deer. One of the blessings of living in modern suburbia is no deer in the heart of it. Lots of rabbits, but no deer. So sorry to hear about their damage to your oldies but goldies.................Maryl

Kate, I am so happy with my Entwined in the Vine, it has done really well, and simply magnificent this year. Of course, just started blooming, but plenty of buds and has multiplied well. I got Exotic Starfish last year as a single fan, 3 fans this spring. Tall Dark Stranger has lots of blooms daily, and multiplied like mad. If I have a complaint, and I don't really because it looks so good, it is that it blooms out faster, despite all the buds. Garden Butterfly is on my wish list, but maybe I should rethink that. So pretty though.

Oh Julia, I hope your deer stay in their lane! I hated to see the damage done to my plants. But hopefully the other beds will be protected through bloom time.

I have mixed reviews of Exotic Starfish-love the blooms but they are on short scapes this second year and the plant has not multiplied in a year.

My Julia bed has gaura, gomphrena, lantana, marigolds (not perennials but great color), zinnias, blanket flower and some annual vinca. It also has some coneflowers and rudbeckia. At one end I have some chrysanthemums. I also have some roses in this bed and an iris in a corner. A lot of stuff!!

I like the beds....Look at the blooms! Karen Cook catches my eye; I always seem to like edge no eyes, Pick Up Lines is a beauty. Stardust Dragon is lovely, I really like Bluegrass Shadows; lovely colors too. Tall Dark Stranger is a relly pretty clump, but Exotic Starfish is my favorite. My is doing very little this year, but it is such a lovely bloom and three is much better.

If deer get in my beds, it will require a shotgun (which I don't have at this time).

One of my cats caught a squirrel and left it on the iris bed, but thankfully, it was gone the next day. I don't know if a cat or a dog took it off but I did not find a dead squirrel to be an ornamental item.

So sorry to read the deer are devouring your roadside gardens. I'm hoping they don't come for mine this year. So many pretty ones here. Exotic Star Fish and Garden Butterfly are so striking. Karen Cook is a pretty one, and that clump of Tall Dark Stranger is impressive. I always like Entwined in the Vine.

Maryl, you know how it is with purple and heat. This one gets no shade-just heat all day-no chance of retaining color-but for a couple of hours it is a wowzer!!

Nancy I am so glad your EITV is multiplying well. It is so pretty in clump form. I am hopeful Garden Butterfly will begin to multiply-it really is a pretty bloom.

Wow Kate, i adore those bed shots, so much room, so impressive. Those darn deer! i hope they find somewhere else to munch, i would be crying. no deer here in suburbia, just squirrels digging in my potted plants

Kay, I can actually see you ”packing heat” to protect your gardens!! I am hoping Exotic Starfish increases more-only one scape this year but lovely blooms.

Thanks Debra-I know you can appreciate deer problems. They can inflict major damage in a very short time.

And a reminder to those of you in suburbia, deer can become citified in a heartbeat!! Here is a photo my daughter in Nashville sent this week that

was posted on her community Facebook page. A small fawn-reported to appropriate authorities who told them to leave it alone-that the mother would be back. And she did and off they trotted, probably to someone’s daylily garden. (Watch out, Debra!!)

That little fawn is so cute, but hope it doesn't find my garden! The peope down the street have put up a deer crossing sign in their yard. I hope they aren't feeding deer.
