Mediterranean Home, but Contemporary/Transitional Aesthetic

My husband and I purchased a home which was built in what the builder coined "modern Mediterranean." We did not design the house. There are many things I love about the house. Arched entryways, high ceilings and travertine tile, are some of my favorite elements. I am not so big on the wrought iron accents.

My husband and I are definitely in the Contemporary/transitional aesthetic category in terms of personal taste. Actually if my husband had his way, we would live in a stark, modern home, so the above style is our compromise.

Does anyone have some suggestions for color palettes (I like soothing, but comfortable and fun)), something to do for large, empty walls, and what to do with the wrought iron?

[the large US Flag is bc we just hosted a party for my brother who was sworn into the Navy]

TIA
