Miniature, more like tiny, orchids

I have heard of miniatures, but I didn't realize they came this tiny! This belongs to a friend of mine. He has an extensive collection of orchids but I had never seen this one before today. The buds are just starting to open.

I joked with him that this is a Barbie orchid.

If your friend took his miniature orchid to an orchid society, it might be benched with other orchids with miniature blooms.

The criteria for the miniature bloom class at a local orchid society is blooms no larger than 10mm at the widest point.

I suspect that most species orchids growing in the wild would have miniature blooms.

That is about the size of a pin head. Wow that is tiny. It has a nice root system. Your friend and very lucky and you are for being able to go when you want. Is that the same friend with those beautiful hoya's?

Yes, meyermike, it is the same friend! He has the coolest treasures hiding in the "employees only" section of the greenhouse. I'm so glad he showed this one to me. I had NO idea they could be so small! Clearly my exposure to orchids is pretty low.
