You could do blankets from granny squares which wouldn't be too hot to handle as they're small.

Thanks colleen, I've done that, but the squares are a total butt-pain to sew together and then they need a border. And I've done so many blankets now, I'm ready for a change.

I crochet them together as I go along. I would dread sewing the whole afghan together at the end. A dreary task.
