Cabinet Help / Suggestions

We are adding a dry bar/buffet to our formal dining room and would like some help with cabinet recommendations. The house is 15 years old and has the original, but upgraded, builder Aristocraft cabinets in the kitchen which is adjacent to the dining room, but separated by a wall. The house in a mid/upper middle class neighborhood and we want to do something appropriate. The area will be used primarily for extra storage, but also for serving for occasionally entertaining so it wont take the wearabuse of a kitchen.

We're considering American Woodmark after seeing the dispalys and getting the price of about $2600. The alyout is 2- 30x18x34.5 base, 1- 30x12x30 upper and a 24x24x84 pantry.

Other mid level considerations:

Avance (recommended by a local designer) - $3500

Barker Cabinets (online RTA, seem very well made and have nice wood options & custom sizing) - $3400

Kitchen Design Pros (online RTA) - $3700

Upper middle options (hoping to not spend this much if not needed):

Kemper - $4800

Pioneer - $4500

Local custom cabinet shop - $4900

Thanks for the info. We're looking for full overlay, solid wood face/doors, stained.

Have you considered a free standing buffet with hutch? Personally, dislike kitchen cabinets in a formal dining room, jmho.

I hadn't, but those arent bad. Are they available in more current styles?

youd get great ideas if you sketch the dining room...which spot this would be going and sketch the plan you have in mind. I think perhaps you may be using a tall pantry cab as you mention this.....for display column. but not certain. Something is making me wonder about 5 ft of base cabs with 2.5 ft of an upper and then 2 feet of a tall cabinet of some sort you are calling a pantry. Not really clear how this all fits together.

I agree that a freestanding piece of furniture is much better suited for a dining room.

Using my amazing drawing skills (LOL) I made a floor plan for the room. Obviously this isnt a scale drawing. Also, you can see the cabinet design.

    Heres the sketch

Not a good design. At all. Find a better kitchen designer.

Can you elaborate please? I'm definitely not a designer, but I thought it looked fine, so I'd like to know why this is not a good design so I can make a better choice.

What is the point of posting comments if you won't explain them when someone sincerely wants to know why?

On a side note, if I did go with furniture pieces instead, is it possible to add rolling shelves to a buffet cabinet?

By rolling shelves - do you mean pull out shelves?

    Correct, pull out shelves.

I used American Woodmark in my kitchen and did a built in buffet in the dining room (as well as all our bathroom vanities as well). So far, I've been very impressed with the quality. After 6 years, I've had no issues. I installed them myself and found them to be very straight and true. The finish has held up well. I liked them enough that when I went to finish off my laundry room, I went back and ordered them again.

I like the idea of using a piece of furniture, then it doesn't seem like you need to worry as much about coordinating with the kitchen cabinetry (if that's even a concern). There are lots of modern bar cabinets and sideboards out there. We have a semi-custom china cabinet that we love. But that's not necessarily a savings over the cabinetry you've been quoted.

A free standing buffet with open shelves above (instead of a hutch) might also be a good option for a less formal look.

Thanks for the suggestions. The storage I'm looking to add is more of kitchen overflow and a bar area, rather than dining room related item likes table cloths and china. So while I'm warming to the idea of a piece, or pieces, of furniture I definitely dont want open shelves, or drawers really.
