Every year?.........no. At least not with regards to root pruning. Plant growth may dictate increasing pot size - up potting - but root pruning is generally not necessary unless/until you have reached the maximum sized pot for your situation. And depending on the quality of the media used and its durability, that may need refreshing or replacing periodically as well.

I consider 3-5 years as a repotting/root pruning guideline. But it looks like some up potting is advised for the schefflera and ficus.

I follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule. Some plants are happy in a same pot for many years, while others grow so fast, they need attention more often. No matter how long it has been, if you unpot a plant and find a pancake of roots at the bottom of the pot, it should be removed. I usually use a shovel to chop that off. On the few occasions I did not do that and just put it in a bigger pot, it did not go as well, and is often fatal. After seeing the difference, I've rarely just potted-up.
