Have you identified the floor wood species you already have? Some types of wood do not take stain well, such as maple.

You can pop off an oak cabinet door and lay it on the wood flooring to see if you like the current match. Add a piece of white paper for better camera balance.

Dark wood floors are a PITA to keep clean. They show every piece of dust and crumb, which are magnified against the dark stain.

Thanks so much Beth, that's really great. Would be really interested in seeing what thoughts you have for stains. The first option wouldn't work for us, as we're just doing the floor right now (we want to do the rest later, but the floor really needs it). The second one is interesting - our countertop is black granite, so it would be a little different, but I like the different color island to vary things up - that might be something we could do short-term. Anyway, thanks again, look forward to the stains if you can share them!

Our white oak floors are a shade lighter than the birch cabinets. The counters are soapstone, so pretty much the same effect as your black granite.

When picking a stain color, keep in mind that you can combine stains to get the shade you want. That’s what we did.

You need to know the wood you are dealing with. I have no issue with dark floors they are like white cabinets they don't get any dirtier thay just tell you whan they are dirty. I think if the floor is the same wood as the cabinets might be best to just match them . Make sure before choosing to do anything your lighting is LED in 4000K then at least the colors stay true.

As Idecor says if you are going to the effort of putting wood in the kitchen it has to match the rest of the house. Now you are talking a surface that is going everywhere- you could use water based poly which leave the floors lighter which would give you more contrast with the cabinets, or stain it with a color like special walnut that would make them about the same value as the cabinets but a different tone (more brown less orange). What works with the rest of the house and your furnishings.
