We have old-fashioned molding frames and swirly plaster in our house. I generally like it and don't want to take it off, but I'm totally stymied as to what color to paint everything.

To explain the current Versailles-weird look: When we first moved in, we had this as the dining room, all yellow with gold trim, but then we made this the living room, and moved in a red plush sofa, and a dark red-brown leather sofa. There's a Syrian rug too, rolled up right now, that's reddish with a bit of dark blue and wine and tiny bits of yellow and emerald green. I painted inside the frames blue, as a sort of stopgap, but it never worked.

Recently, I thought I'd replace the yellow with a coral (keeping the blue inside), but I picked one that's way too pink (Benjamin Moore Pink Polka Dot--duh, I should have known from the hideous name). And now I've lost my nerve.

I like bright and saturated colors (our dining room is orange and pink, inspired by some sari colors) and I don't like neutrals much. This room doesn't get a lot of natural light, and it is usually lit with incandescent table lamps. We have lots of books and records. I want it to feel cozy and a little library-ish. (We're finally making proper bookcases, which prompted the painting fit...)

I'm worried the coral is just the wrong route entirely. And I'm thinking i should scrap the idea of different colors inside and outside the molding. but I don't know what one color to go with. Open to all suggestions! Thanks.
