flagstone disaster

Hey Houzz friends. Our backyard has been turned into a terrible gray flagstone disaster. .We requested a walking path on flagstone through the dirt areas on the photos uploaded. After 3 incorrect installs, I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to make this area nice working with the flagstone that is already cemented down (the layout is not what we had requested) . We need some more flagstone near the outdoor kitchen to stand on when cooking, but I really do not want to fill in much more with flagstone, (bc of what they already installed) but my husband does not want it to look like we ran out of money and stopped the path abruptly . There is a major reno happening so many plants and trees have been trampled, I know in time it will grow back and help restore color. We were going for a little napa and a little tropical retreat/ resort feel. Any softscape ideas also would be appreciated. We still have a ton of the flagstone and DG and bendaboards, and we live in southern california.
Things I’m throwing around would be putting small warmer pebbles down between the flagstone , or end the flagstone somewhere near the kitchen in an wavy abstract way and just fill in the empty path with exsisting DG.
