What’s it growing in? Is it just planted in rough grass? Did you water it in? And where are you located? Can you provide a picture showing the whole shrub in situ?

No it is mulched in an area that was surrounded by grass but I killed off the grass recently so I could mulch the whole area.

I am in the south eastern US, zone 8a, the area gets at least six hours of sun per day. There was a lot of rain here in the month of June which is when it started showing up. We also get a lot of humidity the summer months. I have been spraying every two to three weeks with fungicide, rotating Daconil and Bionide Copper fungicide, especially right after a bout of rain.

These are both Purple Diamond which I believe is a type of Ruby. It has been in the ground since September of 2020.

It lost almost all of its leaves last year from this same thing. Leaves turn orangish red, spots on it, then drops off. I cleaned up the area of old leaves and remulched this Spring.

What is your soil type? They prefer more on the acidic side. And they can get root rot easily, they do not like wet feet or to be planted too deep.

I’m in Tx8a and finally yanked all of mine after one died (they were all always struggling). Then I moved to a different house which had two existing ones. Both always looked awful. Those got yanked, too.

I’ve never had one that looked healthy, I think my soil is just too alkaline. I’ll never plant one again.

If nothing I’ve mentioned applies, ask at a trusted local nursery (not big box) and see what they say. Good luck!
