Seedling "Rubber Maid" X Pink Aloha has improved its stats a lot since last year. It's gone from the high bud count of 15 last year to scapes with 23 and 26 buds this year.

Dancing Flamingo x Hannah Marie is an ML bloomer. The first blooms were 7.5 inches.

SC Francis Busby x Blazing Cannons has improved its stats this year. Last year both scapes had 13 buds. This year bud counts range from 14-18. It's four feet tall now, and has instant rebloom scapes on every fan.

Abilene Lillian x Ruby Lipstick 1 improved its bud count from 9 last year to 14 this year. It went from 22 inches to 28 inches tall.

Abilene Lillian X Ruby Lipstick 2 had a setback from last year and appears to be the victim of grub attacks. It's shorter than last year and only has 8-9 buds. It had 10 buds last year. It did orginally multiply from one fan to seven, but then three fans disappeared in Spring - a sure sign grubs totally devoured the roots on those immature fans.

I think Divas in Diamonds is my favorite pink. I do like your Dancing Flamingo seedling too. I can see the good form and crimped edges of Pink Aloha in your other seedling. Nice that it's stats are looking up...........Out of curiosity, I see that you have Hensley's Biltmore Style as one of your parents. What's it look like to you in person............Maryl

Maryl - Biltmore Style is limping along in a broken pot. I didn't take a photo of it this year, but here's one from a few years ago. The pictures I take of it usually turn out too bright a red. This burgundy color is about right.

Divas in Diamonds is lovely, as are several of the singles. I was impressed by how lovely Angels Bow Down is. But the seedlings! I like the Dancing Flamingo seedling, but as you would expect, the Francis Busby one really suits my taste for that color. I note that I like the color of Abilene Lillian 2 X Ruby Lipstick much better than the color on Abilene Lillian. That red is great! I am sure I will need it if you introduce it. It is just right.

Clumps are gone here as well. You still have lots going on. Blazing Saddles and Divas in Diamonds are so pretty. The Rubber Maid and Dancing Flamingo seedlings really stand out but the SC Francis Busby seedling shouts out! What a color!! Lots to like in this post.

Julia - I've had There's A Place for two bloom seasons, and both seasons it's been on short scapes. It has about 12 buds per scape and doesn't seem as vigorous or well-branched as most other Hansons I've grown. I think it's more of a hybridizer's plant than a garden performer. It's been short for Avedon in Texas too. It does have beautiful blooms and multiplies OK. Here's another photo of it.

Kate - I still have plenty of clumps, I just chose to post a lot of single flower shots that had built up over the past few days. Thanks for mentioning the Rubber Maid and Dancing Flamingo seedlings. The Blazing Fran seedling is pretty, but it can have its splotchy days too. The color is fiery.

The Biltmore Style seedling is a nice bitone. What a pest the grubs seem to be. Have never had any grub destruction here. What causes it?

Mantis - I have Japanese beetles, Green Junebugs and Chafer Beetles in this yard, and grubs are part of their life cycles. Grubs normally feed on grass turf, but also on other plants, and the beetles are creatures of habit. They lay their eggs where they were born, and the beetles also LOVE decaying mulch. Both beetles and grubs look for wet dirt where they can move easily, so they like my watered beds. Both types of J beetles are highly attracted to white and light yellow flowers and tend to lay eggs around those daylilies first. Grubs are also attracted to roots that have lots of nitrogen, so they seek out my daylilies that have been fertilized. I have mostly Bermuda grass in this yard, and that may increase the problem. The Bermuda goes dormant in the winter. With this freeze and thaw climate, temps warm Grubs wake up before the Bermuda grass, and move from grassy areas into the beds. I have grubs not only in my in-ground beds, but in raised beds, pots and even in my compost bags. I spent nearly $500 last year on various grub killers (Milky Sport, Grub-Ex, BT and nematodes), but still they persist, although in much smaller numbers.

You think you don't have grubs. But short scapes, loss of fans, and lack of increase of fans are all symptoms of grub damage.

I can't pick a favorite, every single one is my favorite. Although the pink color on Judy's Jewel is droolworthy!

Thanks Nancy! The deeply saturated color, triangular watermark and the edge make Judy's Jewel a winner. I just hope I can time the grub preventer right this year so it will finally multiply and grow taller.

Thanks for that explanation of grub damage. I, like Mantis, didn't think we had that problem, but we have areas in the bed where the scapes are shorter than normal and the clumps have diminished. We always chalked it up to poor soil. We do have tons of June bugs and Japanese beetles to a lesser extent. Maybe that is our problem.

Nan - I think more people have grub problems than realize it. When I started growing daylilies, grubs were never mentioned as a threat to daylilies. As of last year, the AHS added information about beetle grubs in their pest section.
