Update: green backsplash. Now need wall paint!

last modified: 5 years ago

Kitchen countertops are going in tomorrow - a full week ahead of schedule! Miracles never cease.... :)

I'll have to choose a backsplash. Leaning heavily toward Soho Baroque Crackled Capri (pictured below). I can't find any installed photos other than the single stock image from their website. I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually used it! I'd also love to hear suggestions on other options for a green backsplash.

UPDATE: The tile below is the one I'm going with. Now I need wall color suggestions!

i like it! what are your counters/cabinets?

Really like the look. I'm not sure crackle is the best for kitchens, though.

This might be it in brown.

Missi, cabinets are white shaker style. Counters are light granite with gray and green veining. Warm wood floors. All other choices are fairly classic or subdued so I wanted to do something fun with the backsplash!

OOOh very nice. DO it do it do it! Have you stain-tested a sample? It won't be as big a concern on a backsplash (and with such a dark color) but it doesn't hurt to test. You'll seal it, of course.

Fireclay makes some nice crackles. I haven't looked at this year's colors but they often have some stunning dark greens.

I have a light green backsplash from Pratt & Larson. They make trim pieces (so does Fireclay)! The one I got is not crackle though. I found crackle wasn't sturdy enough for counterTOP use, and I have a bit of that.

Tori do you have a photo of yours?

I haven’t stain tested it yet. We will seal it before install so that the crackles don’t get grouted. Did you use a trim piece for the edges?

I think it will look gorgeous! And I LOVE colorful backsplashes, it's nice to meet a kindred spirit.

Mine are Celadon green crackle tile, from Heritage Tile, their Subway Ceramics line. They have several shades of green on their website.

I love green anything, and I adore crackle tile (especially Japanese raku). To my eye, though, that deep, olive green is awfully dark for a backsplash in a white kitchen (which accentuates the dark hue). If you have under-cabinet lighting, the dark color will swallow it up. Have you considered a lighter green?

The above tile is from Ann Sacks’s Kannon line.

PM I have a few lighter options to try as well. I will post pictures tomorrow once the counters are installed. I’m fairly certain I want something with some saturated color since everything else is very safe, but it doesn’t have to be dark.

    Darbuka your kitchen is stunning!

I really like this green tile. It looks like the same tile sold by Tile Bar called Nabi Deep Emerald Green. There are several customer photos posted on their website.

I think the tile you selected will loo so good.

Darbuka, I love your kitchen, it’s stunning! Are your countertops soapstone?

Encore has some nice crackle tile in many colors/shapes.

Thank you @sayboone and @Holly- Kay.

Yes, the counters are soapstone…a very hard variety, Belvedere. It has green and white inclusions, which we love. The counters were purchased and fabricated by M. Teixera, who are experts in everything soapstone.

    Those are stunning!

We just used a Quemere Designs crackle tile in a blue green color.

I think the backsplash will be gorgeous! I have no idea how it will clean or hold up over time, but as a person who loves green, I would do that tile in a heartbeat. It will look great with your soapstone too. I would not be concerned about it swallowing up any light. You have a mostly white kitchen and I think the contrast will be the “wow” factor every kitchen needs.

@limpingsquirrel thanks very much for the link. Having some customer photos to consider really helps.

@RedRyder that's my hope! Green has been my favorite color since I was a little girl, so I wanted to incorporate it in some way. Cabinets, floors, and to some degree counters are all very difficult and costly to change, so I figured I'd put it in the backsplash. If I get tired of it in 10 years, it's the least expensive element to change.

@clt3 your kitchen looks lovely, and the tile you chose is gorgeous! I love the texture of it.

I've had a creamy white crackle tile in as a backsplash for 7 years and really like it. It's held up fine. As I recall, the crackle tile had to be soaked in some solution before install. Do a search to see if you can figure out why; I can't remember.

@julieste it's good to hear that yours has held up over time. If I go with the crackle finish, my plan is definitely to seal it before install. I've heard that the grouting process can accentuate the crackle, which I don't want. I'll ask about a soaking solution!

I really like the tile on its own, but not sure if it will bring out the best in the granite. Be sure to test a lot of tiles before deciding and I’d recommend a softer green that has less variation so it’s not fighting with granite.

Good point, @Maureen. I have a few others to try as well. It's harder to find tile in a rich green than I would have expected! Many that I've looked at look yellow/muddy in my house, even with updated lighting. The counters were installed today so I'm excited to see samples with the granite tonight!

Please post all the samples in the best light possible. Both distant and close up photos help us to do the best we can from monitors. Nothing compares to seeing them in person, but lots of pros here have good eyes! I’m sure we can find SOME green that works. You’ll see if this strong color isn’t good with your countertop now that it’s installed. Fingers crossed!

Ok, which one do we like? The triangular pieces are for color only. We will use 3x6 subway. The middle piece is the same colorway as the subway on the left.

    Closeups.

I like the original choice the best. It definitely goes with your beautiful countertop stone.

Ok, I'm going bold and doing the darker green tile! But now I need paint color suggestions. :)

The entire downstairs of the house will be the same color, carried into the staircase and upstairs landing, so I need to love it a lot.

I've sampled SW Topsail and SW Tinsmith. I think the Topsail is too bright and the Tinsmith is too gray. (Terrible photos of the samples I painted next to the kitchen cabinets are below. I also tried them on other walls.)

I'd like something neutral but still with some color to it. Any thoughts?

I’m not a pro, but my eyes say none of them are right. Let’s hope @Flo Mangan or @Beth H or @HIWE get onto this thread and give specific color suggestions. My unprofessional opinion: you need a whisper of green in the wall color. All of these are too dark for me as well. Sooo glad you’re sticking with your initial instinct around the tile. You kitchen will be so unique!

    sayboone thanked RedRyder

@RedRyder I think you're right about needing a whisper of green. It's also hard to determine when the remnants of the old wall color (which I chose to complement honey oak cabinets - very different!) are still lingering.

I've used Glidden's Polished Limestone in the past and really loved it, but I have it in my hallway in this house and it looks a little muddy. I think it has too much beige in it. (In my last house it read as very green/gray/blue, but we also had cherry floors which probably brought that out.) Perhaps it would be different now that the walls are opened up and we get more natural light.

I know you’re gonna hate me, but is there any way you can prime the walls you need to paint? The existing color will ALWAYS trick your eyes, making it harder to see if the new color is right.

And yes, as @stiley said, painting a lot of samples on poster board will help. Samplize samples don’t require you to keep buying tons of paint, so look into those.

@stiley Thanks very much for the link, I will check it out! The photo you posted is gorgeous and helps confirm that a bold green backsplash is definitely right for me. I love it!

Ha @RedRyder, I was thinking the same thing myself as I painted samples last night! I have a few sections of new drywall that I will have to prime anyway, so I can at least do another section of wall elsewhere to give a blank canvas. Samplize is a great suggestion - I had forgotten about them. Off to look at their options....

I would wait until all the hard elements are installed to choose the paint color. Nothing wrong with gathering samples and doing some homework, but make the final decision when everything else is in.

@porkchop_z5b_MI Normally that's exactly what I'd do. The problem is that all of our living room furniture is currently in a POD in our driveway, and my piano is in our garage (not ideal). I want to get the living room painted ASAP so that I can move our things back in. The living room will need to be the same color as the rest of the downstairs, so I'm trying to make a decision now.

I would go with a light warm gray.

@houssaon those suggestions are very helpful, thank you!

Just some SW ideas. Kinda neutral, one is a pastel.
