DIY tips for backsplash

Hi, I'm thinking of doing a backsplash to my new home (not yet ready) by myself. It's an intermediate level and I hope I can pull it.

However, the builder is giving a default 4" backsplash which is not useful at all. When I starting doing the backsplash should I just do the backsplash on top of the 4" piece OR hire a pro to cut the existing 4" piece first?

Looks-wise, I'm not sure how it will be. Did anyone face a similar situation?

You'll need to remove the 4" backsplash before you tile, but it's likely something you can easily do yourself. If you're capable of installing a tile backsplash you can definitely remove the default option.

Use a utility knife to cut the silicone adhesive first. You should just be able to carefully pry it off, or use shims to gently loosen it. Very easy to DIY!

By using the 4" backsplash, the builder/installers don't need to be as precise when fitting the countertop to the wall, in case walls are not perfectly flat. If you pull the short splash, you might have a larger gap than tile will cover, depending on the thickness of the tile you choose. Just something to keep in mind.
