GardenHo, I've read anywhere from between 24 to 42 inches, that's a wide bit of a range! Nice though it produces an attractive rounded plant with blooms to the ground.

Yes, Joe Pye is slower to emerge, but are really tough plants! Once had a winter in which all the snow had melted exposing the plant, then it turned bitterly cold of about -40 ... I believed Joe to be goner, but in a weakened state it slowly had emerged, the saving grace was I had planted it on the deeper side, the next year back to being big and beautiful!

Grabbed 4 at lowes last year. They are emerging. First time checking them out on forums. Not a whole lot about them yet. Yours has me excited as well as the Penn state picture which I haven’t seen until just now ! Did yours attract lots of pollinators ?

Yes, I see 'Ruby' just starting to break ground, late with the lack of heat we've experienced here. This guy was pretty small last year and can't say as if I noticed much pollinator action going on, though big brother 'Baby Joe' draws plenty. The many young rooted cuttings I had taken of 'Ruby', I don't think they made the winter, dug down around one and the thing had disintegrated, maybe will try again this year and winter them over in the cold storage room instead.

Mine in zone 7a are doing great! I added two more to the four I had. The slow bloom makes the plant interesting for quite some time. I like the clean foliage and the structure is great too! One of my favorite plants in my yard. It’s always loaded with bees. Easily my most visited plant. My pic shows 2. The one on the left wilted and died while it sat in a pot waiting for a place in the yard. I planted it next to another one hoping for the best. It was much slower to emerge as you can see with the height difference. just one extra growing season in the ground the joe pye on the right ended up being that much bigger!

James, thanks for sharing, 'Ruby' seems to be just the right size to work well in most beds! I have two plants, only one survived of the ten cuttings from last year, am hoping for better results with those I just potted up, plants grow quite nicely already in their second season.

'Baby Joe' over grew his britches in my garden and been removed from many locations in favor of waist high 'Ruby', am thinking she'll max out around 4' where most happy, easier to accommodate than the towering behemoths that require proper placement. I literally have hundreds of 'Ruby' seedlings am eager to see how any might vary from mom.

So BABY is more like a teenager eh? (I will keep my eye out for RUBY.)

Yes, a fine fit in his youth, though feet in fertile ground and he became a bit of a thug, a good looking one at that, though imposing and elbowing out his peers. Looking around, I miss his presence in prominent locations, though now necessarily relegated to where he's a better fit.

From my original 'Ruby', I now have three plants, next spring shall divide those further.

I now have a total of six. My original in the photo outgrew the space they were in. I will be moving them next year. Still love the plant. I posted a pic of two others in a bed at the end of the driveway that gets decent amount of water from the driveway slope. They’re in their with fothergilla and work perfectly.

Ahhh, looks great Jay and gives good idea of what can be expected when the plants mature, 'Ruby' is indeed a much better fit for many of my beds!
