Appliance Package - Looking for feedback

We are about to pull the trigger for appliances for our kitchen reno. I was almost sure I was going with package #2, but the retailer we are working with just informed me that they would suggest option for package #1 because of their recent experiences with Thermador's customer service. There have been some issues that their customers have had lately with Thermador ranges that make them a bit reluctant to advise me to go with Thermador.

Any feedback/ first hand experiences with any of my choices?? And if matters I am in Canada.

It is a custom designed “package” of all the appliances that I have selected.

Those are not appliances I would choose but you and I may have different needs.

How much do you cook now and hope to in the future? What styles of cooking now and in the future? Do you entertain often or want to? Why do you want a 36" range and 6 burners? Why dual fuel? Was budget the primary concern with these choices?

    No warming drawer?

    Range hood?

@opaone: Thanks for commenting and asking some great questions. And for the detailed blog. Your kitchen is VERY well appointed. I haven't seen Bluestar in my frequent visits to appliance retailers here in Canada. So not sure if they aren't available here? I will have to look.

I cook two meals a day and it will probably stay that way for the near future. But I cook out of neccesity not pleasure. We do enterain a lot and have an ever growing extended family. I do often "run out" of cooktop space sometimes so I am looking to move from my current 30" to a 36" and the 6 burners. I currently have a KA dual fuel and happy with it so didn't feel a need to change. I have a warming drawer now but rarely use it so it wasn't a feature I was looking for now. There is a 42" range hood in the kitchen design but haven't researched for that yet. It will be an insert though.

Budget was a factor for sure. We are only here for about 5 years and while it is enough time to want reliable appliances, I don't want to over spend and not get my money back when it is time to sell.

The Thermador seems well reviewed on appliance sites but is not getting the love from actual users it seems. The KA is okay. It doesn't "wow" me but I am also running out of time to get these ordered. Our current suite of appliance are all KA, about 12 years old and they have not given us any grief at all. Looking to be in the $7 - 10K area for the range.

    I appreciate everyones feedback:)

Since you asked for feedback, I would never, ever, spend $1300 for a MW. A MW costs about $125, and you would be spending an additional $1175 for a ”built-in“ look. In addition, MWs these days do not have long lives. What happens if that one breaks and you need to replace it? Will it be easy to fit the same space with another MW? Idk. I’m all about just plugging one in on an open shelf with an outlet behind it, no built-in trim, and if it breaks, unplugging it, and plugging a new one in. Just my $.02.

If you don't really enjoy cooking then something like a six burner Thermador or KA might serve you well.

If you do enjoy it then a Bluestar RNB with 4 burners plus a good thermostatic griddle would likely serve you better.

Neither choice is right or wrong but one or the other might be the better option for you.

With the original poster's choices, I would pick the Bosch DW and Micro (I personally have the Bosch 800 and it is fantastic) and the Thermador range (I haven't had this but my sister did and it was really nice). I agree with the poster above, I would put in a SZ hands down. If that is not affordable, I would look at the Thermador built in (again haven't had it personally, but my sister did and it was nice). The KitchenAid is not in the same league as the above two for built in refrigeration.

"Wow! @opaone…so, people who enjoy cooking only buy Bluestar? The fact that I have a Thermador rangetop means I don’t enjoy cooking? Or, perhaps I just didn’t want to deal with open burners. What about people who love to cook, but can’t afford a high end appliance of any kind? Sheesh."

You are reading a lot in to what I said that is not there.

And if you've read many of my posts you've certainly read comments I've made that good/great chefs can create great meals on anything and that they can create better meals on the cheapest low end range than I can on Bluestar or anything else.

However... Tools do make a difference. Some tasks require higher and more concentrated heat than can be provided by most consumer ranges other than Bluestar. Even tasks that can be done on just about anything can be easier and/or more enjoyable on a higher end range. So the reality is that the OP, if they don't reallly enjoy cooking, would likely not appreciate the benefits of Bluestar. On the other hand, I know of many people who are great cooks and many much better than me who have much lessor ranges and kitchens and they fully enjoy cooking in them even if they would prefer something better.

And FWIW, an acquaintence of mine who is a highly regarded chef just built a new kitchen in his home and did not install a Bluestar ...because of cost. He did an all gas range but one about a quarter the price of a Bluestar.

There are a number of factors that play in to what the best range is for someone and one size does not fit all.
