help - Basement recessed lighting - practical experience

last modified: 5 years ago

Hello - I have a 1600 sqft basement that I am finishing. I want it to be bright enough. I looked online and there seems to be a bunch of theories, but I am looking for practical application from those who have done it. Online there are calculators and math formulas, but none agree. Many say 6" recessed should be no more than 6 feet apart. Some say 20 lumens per square foot. Some say 1 fixture per 70 square feet. My celling is almost 9' high but I have a large soffit that will be 8' high. Can you tell me in practical application what usually works to have a bright refreshing basement. Right now, by one calculator it is telling me I need about 75 lights and even those lights are more than 6' apart.
