We recently bought a 1.5 story Workers Cottage in Chicago. It’s a historic house, so over 150 years old, and we are trying to figure out a floor plan for the downstairs/basement. It was originally built for two families so there is a spiral staircase that connects the two floors making it a single family home. We are attempting to replace that with a true staircase and bring the bedrooms downstairs. We are trying to optimize the space as there are so many random closets and unused laundry space. We would like to enlarge the bath and shrink the laundry area while creating 3 bedrooms but is our layout just to narrow?
