Hardwood help!!! Please!

We just bought out starter home and I'm choosing hardwood for the main floor. My first choice is either a darker hardwood or this American walnut I found with tons of character. The problem is - the banister in the house is a honey coloured oak that would be an eye sore next to the dark wood.

I can either choose a honey coloured floor to give flow with the banister - although it would change everything (modern look to now more eclectic, colour scheme etc) or I can choose the dark colour and ignore my banister issue. (It's a small banister. It's noticeable but not big)

To change the stairs is expensive and we might not want to put that money into our starter home. PLEASE help!! Opinions needed!!

Contrasting wood colors work just fine. Just pick a darker floor with a complimentary hue.

It's tough to give a truly informed opinion without either pictures of the banisters as well but I would agree with JW's comment above. You are safe in picking a dark floor but look for something, like walnut that has some lighter hues that compliment the banister. You could also consider painting the banister to remove it from the equation. Be careful that you consider performance when choosing your floor as well. Walnut is absolutely beautiful, but soft, maple has less graining, but is denser while hickory has a pronounce grain, beautiful range of hues and is very dense. I don't know where you are located but our firm specializes in sourcing wood flooring. Agree with the two above comments. Mixing woods is fine, and it will lok beautiful. Hardwood flooring is too expensive to get something you won't be completely happy with.
