I had under-tile floor heating installed in two of my bathrooms (in Southern CA). Three cons: (1) Each installation required a dedicated electrical circuit; (2) increases my monthly electrical bill when I have it turned on; and (3) unsuitable for bathrooms with a kitty litter box. Otherwise, it is really nice!

Love our heated tile floor in our basement bathroom and laundry room (aka Starting from dirt, literally! A basement bath DIY Adventure)! Before the cold bare concrete floor (pre-reno) would suck the soul right out of you through your bare feet! We are planning to add another heated floor to our next bathroom project on the 2nd floor. Research brands - if you are using Schluter products, you might be able to use the Ditra Heat. We used Thermosoft in the basement because we couldn't use Ditra with a 1inch hex tile (2in minimum), but we will use Ditra Heat in 2nd floor bathroom because we are using larger tiles. Make sure you get two temp sensors installed (one is a spare) in case you have a problem after the tile is set. I think I have photos and there's a bit of discussion about the heated floor in my post about the project (probably part 2). We don't notice a difference in electric bills between winter (endlessly long) and summer when we do turn it down. Also, you don't want to use rugs or pile clothes or towels on a heated floor. I have a small rug (18x24in) by the tub and that's not a problem.

If basement, or main level slab in Winter climate, you will need a thermal break .

typically in upper level joist or truss construction you can get away without it. be sure to add backup sensors
