Large Kitchen Layout and Design

Hello,

We are building and currently working on plans. I am trying to figure out locations of appliances and plumbing for the kitchen and pantry. We will have a 36" fridge, 36" freezer, 60" range with double ovens underneath, an additional stacked double oven and a microwave. I'd like an area for baking that has my bosch and kitchenaid mixer, and baking supplies, cookie cutters, etc...and a seperate area for breakfast prep (toaster, blender, etc)main sink and also a prep sink, an Additional fridge/freezer in the pantry. I am looking to hire someone to help me with the actual look and design of the cabinets and hood design using cad or a similar software. I love coastal colors (soft blues, whites and pinks), and my style is transitional with sophistication (sconces, trim deatil, picture frame moulding, cabinets with furniture feet detail, etc... and a little glam). I'd love to see your layout ideas to work with our large family and then check-out your actual projects to see if you'd be a good fit for the design of the space. I tried reaching out to locals but everybody is too busy or they want to charge me by the project instead of by the hour. I know most designers hate double islands but that is what will work best for our family. I would like to pay by the hour, since I have an idea of what I want...I just need to see it drawn up since I can't do that. Thank you so much!

When I remodeled my kitchen I paid $1800 to the Kitchen designer to come up with plans. That included a 2 hour consultation, then an on site consultation, producing fully drawn out floor plan and elevations. We then met again, adjusted/changed some things and got an updated plan and elevations. Exact dimensions with all details called out on the plans. This was in Los Angeles a few years ago, so unless you are in a bigger metro area, I doubt your cost is that much more.

The KD was worth every penny. I gave up trying to teach myself sketchup after a few hours! When all was said and done, that fee was a tiny percentage of the whole project.

Based on the size and finishes, you are spending a lot of money on this build, but you are going to be cheap about paying for expertise that you don't have or don't want to take the time to learn!

Why isn't your architect laying out the kitchen for you? My architect did the basic kitchen layout with the house we are building, but I made changes later with the KD/cabinet maker.

With how big the kitchen is I want to go straight to the KD and then give that to the architect.

@Chispa thank you, this is so very helpful!

Instead of double island why not go with a u shape with two sides opening up to living space. That would allow for seating for 6-8.

An alternative to a double island design is a large rectangular table with chairs in place of the second island. The seating is infinately more comfortable, usable and communicative. No stools for seating at the first island.

@dan1888 we have a large dining table next to the kitchen window which will seat 12. The island is just to seat our kids during breakfast and snacks

The kitchen is large, with lots of storage, but with the huge appliances you don't have much wall space. Do you want suggestions for layouts, or do you just want to connect with a pro who will draw your ideas? Click on the 'FIND PROFESSIONALS' link at the top of the page--maybe you can find help there.

BTW, I find the MS Paint program easy for layouts--it's mostly moving boxes around, but I've never tried any of the programs for 3D renderings.
