You need to decide which fireplace you want, as they will have differing requirements for combustible materials. For example, I have a gas ribbon fireplace. The fireplace required noncombustible material three feet up from the top of the fireplace box. This was framed on the sides and then cement board used as the underlayment for the tile. Above the tile are cement panels.

If you don't need noncombustible material, it will all be a lot easier per my contractor.

Good luck, love your inspiration pic. I'm sure you can make that happen. Mine started with a flat wall. You can frame out anything with enough planning and creativity.
