Kitchen island wall ideas

I have a wall above my kitchen island that I need suggestion on what to put there. It's a modern condo in San Francisco. Kitchen cabinets are taupe colored and the island granite top is green. Living area is open to kitchen and has contemporary furniture. The room needs some color.

Yes to art. Since the space is contemporary, and also in a kitchen, I would look at posters of Wayne Thiebaud's dessert / cakes series. His painting "Encased Cakes" sold recently at Sotheby's for $8.46 million, but you could buy a poster for under $100. His work is contemporary, colorful, and the desserts jump off the canvas so that it looks like you could dip a finger into the icing (or pie or whatever).

You are in San Francisco. Wayne Thiebaud is a Bay Area artist, and also has done a series of paintings of San Francisco streets.

Really add a pice of art to that space and some colored stools would also help. A big vase full of fresh flowers a great way to add color in any space .

I agree with the previous comment that art would be good. You need COLOR. Desperately need color, so a large colorful poster would be perfect. Perhaps one of those french or italian prints about wine or food.

What colors do you like with pretty natural grey-green counter? I experiment with my clothes, etc. by laying nearby, as though a piece of art. This type color art could contrast a bit, and bring out the green.

Or do you like pastels, soft neutral... textures in modern way.. I guess 2nd repeats cool tone of LED lighting.

I would hesitate to do art in a kitchen ….an accent wall will have a much bigger effect on the mood of the space…depending on the natural light it could be rather bold…once you add color …then …a striking poster …under plexi-glass..unframed ….would be striking…if you are solid into contemporary decor

You could go with an earthy, but modern vibe, adding lovely pottery on the island, injections of black and subtle but really interesting art.

It doesn't have to be bold (unless that’s what you want), as subject matter and uniqueness will have more impact. I really like the artist below.

I would stick with your monochromatic look, but for more color, add a vintage or an over dyed runner that complements your art.

Add brightly-colored kitchen towels, canisters, potholders and a vase (for flowers) in your favorite color…no more beige, gray, white. Hang some art in there, too…protected by glass if you prefer. Is there a window that needs a colorful shade or curtain? I also like area rugs to make standing at the prep zone and sink more comfortable. You may add a poster on the side of the peninsula/island. Colorful dishes might also help beat the blahs.
