it might be best to properly ID the culprit.. to insure it is not a perennial weed ... as a pre emergent wont work with such ...

im thinking you are hoping for the easy way out ,... but i have dug up enough grass infested beds to know.. there isnt any easy way ....

I don't think pre-emergent herbicides are going to preferentially kill off grasses... and not harm the hostas at least a little. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don’t think a pre-emergent is going to help you. Sounds like a lot of manual pulling to me☹️

More hostas!

I had success this season with a spray called Grass be Gone. It has to be applied when the grass is growing BEFORE it seeds, timing is crucial for it to work. I will be using it again next season. It didn’t effect any of my perenials

Divide snd spread the daylilies and hostas at the same time you weed. They should be thick enough thst no grass can invade. By the way, is the plural of hosta hostas? it sounds odd, like ’pastas!’

Of anyone I would have though you, ken, would know this......or maybe you just mistyped. Hosta is a genus name and is legitimately pluralized by adding an "s"......just as one does with any of a zillion other genus names. From Wikipedia: "Hosta is a genus of plants commonly known as hostas, plantain lilies and occasionally by the Japanese name gibōshi. Hostas are widely cultivated as shade-tolerant foliage plants."

Sometimes ken's attempt at humor comes off badly. I am assuming that is the case with the previous remarks.

Uh, Ken, they are hostaS in my little world too.

But I am living in the land of fruits and nuts here.

Squirrels are eating all the lemons and the live oak acorns, and digging in my hosta pots.

I was young and ignorant when I made my username.... still young but teachable ... lol

There are always going to be weeds.

I hand weed. A lot.

I use a weed torch frequently.

I use a pre-emergent.

I walk around with a hoe some days and herbicides on other days.

It's just constant vigilance and never allowing anything weedy to go to seed. If you stay on top of it then it is relatively 'easy' as far as gardening goes. If you allow it to get too bad it becomes overwhelming hard work and that just adds to the procrastination levels.

So stay on top of it.

The thicker you plant the less weeds there are so one part of the solution is to buy more plants and divide what you already have.

If you have grass in your beds, obviously you don’t have enough daylilies or hostas. Divide and spread them thickly.

Here’s something else I do: when I bought this house there was a hearty stand of monkey grass. I divided and spread it and now I have lots - it’s great for edging flower beds and helps prevent grass from creeping in.

Monkey grass was too aggressive in my garden. It was like adding a weed to control a weed.

I knew I had the answer to plurality of hosta somewhere. I just found the dust cover….
