need your mantel help

What do you think I should do for mantle decor? The house is 1939 yet my taste is more boho/modern. I’m not sure how to best style this whole area! It’s the focal point once you walk in, so I’d like come home to something nicely put together. Would love your guidance!

Use the concept above to decorate the top of the mantel mantel, then add a Custom Rope Fireplace Screen with some wrought iron spearhead andirons to spice things up below.

My mother used to love to decorate the mantel. She would do color themed mantels each month. Mom really went to town! I love what decoenthusiaste has posted. You have a large area to work with, so I would fill it up - go big! Experiment and try different combinations.

Think about the height of your mantle before you lean pictures up there. Layered is good but careful of the tip to cluttered.

    Add art here.

Modern art or boho in a traditional home can look great.

I really like the mirror, and deco’s layered idea. Boho is so fun because it’s such a creative style and just about anything goes. :)

A couple ways to go: art or mirror:

#1 art: skip the mirror and little decor items and find a great single piece of art--that reflects your modern taste. You haven't shown enough photos of the room for people to make room specific suggestions. I'm showing black, white, reddish gold here because it echoes fireplace pattern and your floors but in a modern way. What other colors do you have in this room? With art, you create a dynamic between the beautiful fireplace and the boldness of one piece of art.

Here's a fireplace similar to yours with a fairly bold art work and nothing else--much more interesting than a lot of little pieces.

Put an armful of birch logs in a modern basket on the hearth instead of that bitty plant. Fill the firebox with big chunky logs.

#2: Mirror: If you lean more boho and really want the mirror, then there's this approach with interesting mix of reflective mercury glass candlesticks--much more effective than bits and pieces. If you want to have seasonal items like your pumpkins, then do all white, or all orange pumpkins in a row all the way across. At Christmas get all vintage glass Christmas tree balls and line them up in a row. Avoid going "cutesy/cluttery" if you want a modern version of boho. Don't use off the shelf decor items but check out vintage thrift shops or modern museum shops with well designed pieces that all relate. No fake plants.

I just gave Jinx a "like" because she really nailed the boho/mirror suggestions. Notice how tightly focused and well chosen the mantel pieces are.

I would remove the mirror. It is essentially the same thing as a piece of artwork but it only reflects the opposite wall and there is nothing interesting about that. Would replace the mirror with an actual piece of artwork that provides color, pattern and texture. Start with that as your anchoring piece and then add other smaller pieces that you love and have history with you. Good luck!

If there's a wall across from an art work or a window, then that can be great, though--kind of a doubling of a wonderful feature across the way.

Thank you SO much everyone. Your guidance is so helpful. I’m trying out different things and still have a ways to go, but here’s a first (yet still incomplete) pass:

It doesn't look boho or modern, but an inspiration photo would be better to post than a description.

I feel a mirror is too high for that mantle.

It definitely has a boho feel, OP.

Yeah I’m into it so far! I’ll keep playing around. Thank you!!
