POLL - 1 shelf or 2?

The space above the counter is going to be tiled in subway tile with a grout to match the wood features (floor and countertop). The question is - should we have 1 shelf or 2? The space from the top of the counter to the ceiling is 36 inches (low ceiling). The two cords are for led strip lights to go under the shelves. The cords are at 15 inches from counter top and 25 inches from counter top. Tiler is coming next week and will start backsplash on Tuesday. If we need to reduce to 1 shelf / cord will have to get electrician hère on Monday. So - help!!! One shelf or two? The counter top is 3 inches thick. Also trying to decide if shelves should be same wood as counter top or white melamine. Help!

With your sink right below, I would do the upper shelf only. Headroom, and your low ceiling will make 2 shelves look crowded.

If you do two shelves each space will be 12" minus the thickness of the two shelves. If you do one shelf the space, if you center it will be 18" minus the thickness of the shelf. The bottom of cabinets are typically around 18" and countertop appliances will generally fit under them against the backsplash. Some countertop appliances will not fit under a 12" shelf. I would match the shelves to the countertop, I think.

The bottom of the first shelf should be at least 18" up from the counter to allow for countertop appliances. Lovely photo, btw. I think I would do one shelf, raise it a bit to 24" and do a rail system under. Or do a short shelf underneath it. - like one spice jar wide or one coffee mug wide.
