Picking chillis

last modified: 5 years ago

I’ve just acquired this chilli plant. There was no information with the plant but I believe it is an apache chilli but I’m not 100% sure... does anyone have any tips on when i should pick these chillis? Any extra growing and caring advice would be appreciated too!

im no chili expert ... but just pick one off and try it ... you sure have enough ...

was it just dug out of the ground and potted?? ... will it remain outside.. where ever you may be .... big city name .. i would be concerned with transplant shock ....

im not sure they are good as houseplants without supplemental light ...

maybe you should ID it ... im not even sure if they are all edible ...

crikey.. maybe i should just delete this.. rotflmbo ...

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 ive picked and tried one, fairly spicy. they were reduced in a super market, only 25p for the plant! Only labeled as edible indoor chillis though which isnt too helpful, but at least i know they wont kill me. They’ll be living potted on my window cill. ive read that there is a good time to pick them and doing so at the right time can encourage more chillis to grow... but yeah im not even sure what kind of chillis they are... but yes you’re right, mainly i need to ID them and i can figure out the best way to care for them from there..

I love chili peppers in containers, they are pretty good indoors too. I've had them flowering on basement window sills in December. The small ones are easiest, particularly fond of serranos and cayenne. Yeah, I don't get the whole "ornamental" labels, they are all basically the same species, so I can't imagine they would be toxic, but I grow mine more for ornament than culinary value anyway, they are all gorgeous!

@party_music50 Cheers party music. ive actually picked them all now inorder to pickle them. was hoping for some info on how to care and whether picking at the right time and when that might be encourages more growth. my original question wasnt very specific I just dont know much about caring for these things. next harvest i wlll try and pick them as soon as they are looking like the one in the lower right of the picture like you mentioned, i only acquired the plant yestersay.

ps, i like party music too.

The plants are very tricky to keep going over winter here because of our low light levels. For 25p you’ve already won but I wouldn’t expect too much going forward.

Give them the sunniest window and supplemental light if possible. They will keep producing if they get enough light. Otherwise, they may bloom set fruit and the n drop it if there isn't enough light. They may drop most of the leaves if they don't get enough light but will bounce back in spring/summer. Watch out for apid infestation that can make it messy and unpleasant to have it indoors for the winter. I have plants going that I started from seeds last fall.
