Bedroom progress and question about lighting

last modified: 4 years ago

Here's the progress on our bedroom so far. Now is my last chance to do any work to it for a while, so I had some questions about lighting. None of the upstairs rooms have overhead lights, and two of the bedrooms, including this one, have acoustic tile on the ceilings (original plan to remove and drywall is no more). The room is 13x20, so long and skinny, and has only one wall light by the door on one side. In the living room and sunroom I hung overhead lights and ran the wires on the surface of the walls and ceiling and used raceway channels. It's not ideal, but it works. I could do that here as well. The beam in this room makes placement of an overhead light a little tricky. My wife suggested wall sconces by the bed. I suppose this would work, but in that case wouldn't lamps be a little simpler? (The ones on the vanity aren't used because there's no spot to plug them in.) There are only two outlets in the room right now, though adding another one through the baseboard would be pretty easy. Is an overhead light the best option, or wall sconces, lamps, or nothing? I'm thinking more in terms of what potential buyers would want, as it doesn't matter very much to us.

I wouldnt want the wall sconces. A buyer may have a different size bed than you have, or may want to move the bed slightly. The wall sconces, could be in the way of how someone else wants the room to look. I would add more outlets, because people will want them, and I would add lamps. The lamps on the dresser need to work, so an outlet is needed there. The bedroom is coming along nicely. I like it.

I'd try moving the bed around before I put up lamps. Your furniture is all huddling at one end. What would happen if you built out the chimney breast to the width of the bed and put it there?

Love the blue with the antique furniture!

I personally use overhead lights in bedrooms only once in a blue moon so I wouldn’t miss it. The two outlets would be very problematic though, I feel like we’re constantly running out of space to plug things in and we have quite a few more outlets around the room.

@cat_ky Thanks! Definitely need to add more outlets. That's important and not a lot of work. We use a power strip right now if we need more. We probably wouldn't use the lamps anyway; I think my wife plans to give them away. Glad to hear wall sconces wouldn't be great. I didn't like that idea either.

@P Banos Thanks! The furniture is at that end of the room because that's where the outlets are (one under the bed and one under the vanity) and because it seemed like the bed and vanity should be opposite. That chimney kind of dictated where we could put them, so the vanity couldn't be centered. We might put a bookshelf on the other side of the chimney. There's plenty of space on the far side of the bed so it doesn't feel too cramped.

@recordaras Yes, we never turn on lights in there anyway. I just wasn't sure if that would bother potential buyers.

I’d wager that most buyers wouldn’t notice. In fact there’s a chance that if you’re showing a furnished house many wouldn’t notice the outlets either (I’ve definitely never thought to count outlets when looking at homes but will now put that on my mental checklist for when we move again ;) ), however I sense that would be more concerning. In our previous condo we had a switched outlet and used that with a lamp for general lighting, in our new home we added recessed lights and have used them maybe 2-3 times in the past 2 years? Not the best investment in our case. :)

@recordaras We certainly didn't notice, even in an empty house. I think some inspectors might note the outlets, though; certainly they note outlets that are loose or aren't grounded. The inspectors we had before we purchased this house missed a lot. I realize there's only so much they can do, but some things were glaring (We asked them twice to make sure there was a dryer vent because we never noticed one and they insisted there was. There wasn't.)

I say no to wall sconces, and yes to adding more outlets, and by the bed is a must for today's market everyone wants to plug in a phone or clock beside the bed. also if someone chooses to use the room differently or set it up another way the wall sconces would become an obstacle. Plugs are handy and you can buy cord and plug wall sconces this would allow you to have it the way you wanted, but also not lock anyone in to have to "use" it the same way.

@RL Relocation LLC Thanks! The outlets are for sure going in regardless of the decision about overhead lighting. The sconces my wife liked were actually plug in ones. Still, I doubt we'd actually end up using them. Possibly we could get a better wall sconce for by the door, maybe with two bulbs. Only problem is that because people have to turn right to come into the room anything too large or protruding would get bumped into a lot.

Are any of the plugs, half hot, meaning they work from the switch. Also, look up ADA compliant sconces, they have a minimum projection for code reasons. Have you thought about just removing the drop ceiling tiles from the beam only? that would greatly improve the room I think. what you do want is a frosted shade likely glass facing up, this will force the light to the ceiling and reflect light off the white ceiling tiles. while still allowing some light out.

another thought could you add sconces to either side of the closet doors?

and to the room layout, center the bed to the wall it's on, leave the vanity where it is, put the dresser on the other side of the chimney, put the bench under the window to the right as a sunny sitting area, center the rug to the room.

@RL Relocation LLC No, no outlets work from the switch; there aren't even switches in most of these rooms, just buttons on the sconces themselves. Putting sconces on the closet is a great idea, though. There's actually a light in the closet already, just a bulb on the ceiling.

I never even thought about removing the tile from the beam only, but that's a good idea. The way it's tiled and trimmed looks odd and draws attention to it.

I like the two sconces in the top right of the picture you posted. Any idea where they're from?

    this one has the switch!

that being said they also make LED bulbs that have a remote that turns them off and on if you do not plan to add wall switches.

@RL Relocation LLC Thanks! That's very helpful. I have had a hard time finding sconces with switches and had to cobble some together from old lights for the other bedroom.

As far as centering the bed, I think we'll leave it how it is at least for now. We just had a new baby so now have the baby bed in there. It's convenient to have the extra space for it next to our bed so I'm not always walking into it.

Not sure if it's obvious from pictures but the dresser isn't centered between the windows because of the radiator on the left. Not sure how the bench would be there. Right now it's just become a place for folded laundry. It's not at all comfortable.

OH if you are handy you can buy the switches online and drill out a hole on the backplate and turn them into switched sconces ( I have converted 100's over the years).

Yes, that's what I did with the sconces in the other bedroom. I just used the switches from the old lights we were replacing. I didn't consider that I could buy them online, but I will keep that in mind.
